I Can't Stand the Silence

T.D. Clinton 1981 (Utah)

I Can't Stand the Silence

I can't stand the silence;
Telling me what I already know.
I can't stand the silence,
creeping in and won't let me go...
I can't stand the violence,
Screeching, flooding, inside my brain.
I can't stand the silence,
Swirling, haunting inside my vein...
When all I want is freedom,
Freedom from the pain,
I can't stand the silence,
Darkened clouds and incessant rain.
There it goes the silence,
Disappearing each time.
There it goes the silence,
Leaving me with rhyme.
There it goes the silence,
Filling me with song,
There it goes the silence,
Wonder all day long.
Here it comes the silence,
creeping once again;
Here it comes the silence,
And in it I can't win.
Here it comes the violence,
Such a loud freight train;
Here it comes the violence,
Shrieking once again.
Bring me now the noise,
The noise that's filled with light;
Bring me now the voice,
That fills up endless night.
Bring me now the noise,
The noise that heals the pain,
Bring me now the noise
that clears up all the rain.
I can't stand the silence,
It returns again and again;
I can't stand the violence,
When will it leave again?

About this poem

This poem just came to me as a song I heard in my head and decided to go ahead and enter it to see what would happen :) The poem is about anxiety and dark incessant thoughts that often fill my head when it is quiet.

I am a very reflective person who loves to "go off the deep end." I actually struggle with OCD and other conditions but I am a cheerful and happy person, otherwise. I'm a mother and a family person, an animal and a nature lover, as well. I love music as one of my favorite things in this world, along with coffee ;) more…
