Hey, Buddy

Started reading comics again this weekend, beginning Mike Carey’s Lucifer. I’m not yet through the first trade paperback (I have the first ten on my shelf), and I’m underwhelmed. It’s a little too intentionally oblique and arcane for me… Lucifer seems to just be able to do whatever he wants when he wants to. Which is cool, y’know, since he’s supernatural, but not too exciting for the reader

Words of Wisdom: The origin of originality

The root meaning of the word “original” means “to rise.” When poetry is called original, it implies that the poet institutes the beginning or “arising” of a new way of viewing the world through a fresh pair of eyes. The poet is in effect; “the originator” as he or she has taken the initiative to be unconventional; to imagine, construct and invent a particularly new and genuine way of expressing themselves poetically. The poet becomes an “author” in the truest sense of the word....

Poetry: Repetition can be an intense experience

Among the many form poems used throughout history and which enjoy a resurgence of late is the pantoum. The modern pantoum is a poem of any length, composed of four-line stanzas in which the second and fourth lines of each stanza serve as the first and third lines of the next stanza. The last line of a pantoum is often the same as the first.

Imaginative literature traffics in selves. The statement can be read variously. The selves can be the creatures in the writing—narrators and characters who present or appear in a novel or a poem. Equally, though, the selves can be the writer, veiled, fed and fitted into the work’s people. William Gaddis was asked which of his characters in The Recognitions was based most on himself. He replied, effectively, that he was all of them.

Weekly Poem: 'American Sublime'

Elizabeth Alexander will become just the fourth poet to recite a poem at a president's swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 20 at President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration. She was born in Harlem, raised in Washington, D.C. and attended Yale University, where she teaches African American Studies. She is the author of four books of poetry, including her most recent, "American Sublime," which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005.

The follow-up to 2006's We Were Here is a beautiful, soft collection of songs about love and family.
