Peggy Sue

by mikangel

On a vacant lot, in early spring, the year 1962,
A ragtag band of seven boys, stood kicking dirt, feeling blue.
Baseball season, they’re needing nine, and they’re still lacking two
When on the lot walks a boy their age, and his sister Peggy Sue.

Behind them came an old man who said,”I’ll ump this show,”
Peggy Sue picked up a ball and started then to throw.
We all stood around the home plate and started talking skat
Then I went to the dugout and came out with a bat.

“Give me your best, I’m not afraid“ but then why should I be?
I’ve never seen a girl before that can throw the ball by me.
But I spoke too soon, and I still don’t know what happened to this day
I’ve never seen the likes of all the balls she threw at me that day.

Her fastball, well, I never saw it, It went by so fast,
And her curve ball dropped out of sight, I knew this couldn’t last
Then her slider and her knuckle ball, I don’t know what happened there
I just know that when I swung, my bat got naught but air.

But the most embarrassed I was that day, as you can plainly see,
Is when she threw her change-up, I said this cannot be
It floated towards me ,oh so slow, and I thought, “I’m gonna do it,”
Then it stopped, I missed, it went on by, that’s all there is to it.

We let her play, and when she pitched, the other team never scored
But when she didn’t , our defense shone all across the board.
We started playing as a team, treating everyone the same
And through the regular season we never lost a game.

We won the championship that year, I remember to this day
The pride we felt and so much joy, and I’m not ashamed to say
I cried the tears of a victor’s joy, I tell you ‘cause it’s true.
That we owe it all to that pig-tailed, red-head, girl named Peggy Sue.
