A carpenter's poem, in three parts

by marek

Part One ( I ain't building no more new houses)

I maybe just an old fool carpenter
but I dream
of building houses
like they did years ago
houses that lasted
a hundred years easy
without
manufactured wood products
without plastics
by the sheet or the yard
without goo by the pound
houses that breathed
houses that had lungs
of their own
and needed no
mechanical recessutation
houses that were'nt
constrained
by manufacturer's influence
on our building code
houses that owed naught
to chemical giants
houses that did'nt
give off hazardous fumes
houses that did'nt
begin rotting
from the get go.

Part Two (An apology)

I ain't building houses
these days
these days I'm doing
anything but
folks tell me I do beautiful work
that may well be
beauty is after all
in the eye of the beholder
me, I just try to do my best
it's my way
of apology
for all
the shitbox houses
that I built
before
I knew better.

Part Three (A word to the wise, and those willing to listen)

To be continued.
