A random poem of mine
Flight 5379

Miles above the quilted earth
traveling faster than loneliness
I saw your face embroidered in white

guiding golden Roman soldiers
through columns of cotton temples
whipping the servant winds
that desperately mocked you

as you charged Jupiter
and Boreas,
their cracked jaws
cursing violent black shadows

Left, then right
backlashing and striking
you grabbed their might
with arms of a phoenix
breaking the turbulent thunder

’til you
prevailed
slitting the throat of the raging grey

Rescuing me to the white

So I have started to feel lately that a lot of us write in multiple forms, we all follow different rules of what is right, but some of us here have started to become poetic zionist and started believing that their way was the right way...
This of course is just my take on it... But I do get a great kick out of Mr Charles Baudelaire...

BEAUTY

Conceive me as a dream of stone:
my breast, where mortals come to grief,
is made to prompt all poets' love,
mute and noble as matter itself.

With snow for flesh, with ice for heart,
I sit on high, an unguessed sphinx
begrudging acts that alter forms;
I never laugh, I never weep.

In studious awe the poets brood
before my monumental pose
aped from the proudest pedestal,
and to bind these docile lovers fast
I freeze the world in a perfect mirror:

The timeless light of my wide eyes.

so in light of recent discussions, I thought that it would be helpful to post up some information on movements.

Classicism adherence to the traditional standards that are universally valid and enduring

IMAGISM
A 20th century movement in poetry advocating free verse, new rhythmic effects, colloquial language, and the expression of ideas and emotions, with clear, well-defined images, rather than through romanticism or symbolism.

Surrealism
"The surrealists desired to open the vistas of the arts through the close observation of the dream state and the free play of thought."

ROMANTICISM
An 18th century movement revolting against the conventional strictness of neo-classicism and placing artistic emphasis on imagination and the emotions.

METAPHYSICAL
Of or relating to a group of 17th century poets whose verse was distinguished by an intellectual and philosophical style, with extended metaphors or conceits comparing very dissimilar things.

REALISM
The endeavor to portray an accurate portrayal of nature and real life without the imaginative representation of idealization.

SYMBOLISM
A late 19th century movement reacting against realism. Influenced by the connections between music and poetry, it sought to achieve the effects of images and metaphors to symbolize the basic idea or emotion of each poem.

Language Poetry
"Language poetry’s purpose was to place complete emphasis on the language of the poem and to create a new way for the reader to interact with the work.

Modernist poetry is a mode of writing that is characterized by two main features. The first is technical innovation in the writing through the extensive use of free verse. The second is a move away from the Romantic idea of an unproblematic poetic 'self' directly addressing an equally unproblematic ideal reader or audience.

New Formalism
"A late-twentieth century development in American poetry that sought to revive traditional forms of verse--metrically, rhythmically, and stanzaically."

The Man Of Poetry Speaks

I was going to put up a description of slam poetry, but honestly my views on slam are that it's more of a performance art than a written craft. I have to agree with John Barr... sorry to my slam friends... don't get me wrong I love it and I think it's beautiful, but it's just different.

In the end there are two people involved in each poem the writer and the reader. If there is no understanding between the reader and the author, was it ever really poetry and who's fault was it?

I hope everyone understands that I don't look at myself as some mass authority on the poetic form nor do I believe that I could share the same air as the beats... All I want is to understand you, and hopefully for you to understand me.
