How valuable is a fetus? In America, where abortion is legal they also have fetal homicide laws [linked below] which makes for a rather contradictory coupling. For instance, hypothetically speaking, let's say a pregnant woman is expecting twins. She is involved in a car accident and as a result one of the twins dies. The man driving the other vehicle can be held liable for the death of the first twin eventhough his actions were unintentional - he could receive a severe fine or even a jail sentence. Now the second twin the mother decides to get aborted, in which case she pays a surgeon to intentionally terminate its life. But how can a man be punished for unintentionally killing the first fetus and another man earn a living by intentionally termnating the other??? What is the value of a fetus? Does it makes sense that the first fetus is considered valuable while the second one is not? Is society suffering from some form of schizophrenia in relation to this issue given the fact that there are laws protecting unborn babies and others allowing for their termination? What would happen, I wonder, if a mother was driving to a clinic with the intention of aborting her unborn baby but got hit by a car and lost her pregancy in the process? Would/should the driver receive payment for his grave error or receive jail time in such a context??? Purely hypothetical questions of course but worth asking nonetheless.
