I was reading our philosophy today, in theory it’s great,
but an ethos is much more than just words on a page.
It’s in what we do, what we say, how we choose to relate
to the people we work with and views that we take.
It’s in the visions we have and the future we make,
each individual’s path effects the whole landscape.
Within every single system is a hidden curriculum.
Listen, Both the staff and the people we care for
will have ideas and habits that clearly impact on
our practices there-for we all need to be careful.

It’s one thing stating that we promote independence
during induction training in a well chosen sentence
but unless we put all those words into actions
in our day to day work we may as well detract them.
We need to give a clear idea of what actually happens.
Through reliable sources we can see natural patterns.
Transparency is always of paramount importance,
there's no point saying we supported a person with a chore
if we thought it less of a chore to do it for them.
Our words need to inform our actions and in turn report them.

So Self Unlimited is you, who you are, what you do,
what you bring to the table and what you receive from it too.

You are supervisors, managers, support workers, administrators.
You are facilitators, initiators, enablers, innovators.
You engage, finding ways to communicate; interact and play.
You are integral to what a person achieves in a day.

We can all relate to staring adversity in square the face
We can choose to embrace it or let it scare us away.

I am dyslexic but I still know how to write a verse,
I used to run away from nouns and hide from verbs,
Through persistence I have learned to bring life to words.
I am still dyslexic but my strategies of learning worked.
By overcoming barriers we can see whole new worlds emerge
In no uncertain terms I urge you to see the person first.
Everyone involved in this deserve to have their voices heard.
Who would want to speak a word to find someone dismissing it.
For instance some businesses show employees what their gimmick is,
How ever they are spinning it, expecting them to mimick it
Like helpful little hypocrites, but what they’re really missing is
The spirit of a thing is in the way in which you’re living it.
Ok… I am ranting now, so let me finish this.
Be aware, take care of yourselves and put yourself in Self Unlimited.

This is likely irrelevant to you, and I mean no offense, but I have a hard time
reconciling 'poetry' (spoken word, whatever label you want to apply) and a
corporate pep-rally. That aside, I think it could be trimmed for concision.

I work for the charity concerned and agree with everything I said. I work for people with disabilities because I have disabilities myself and can relate. This was a good opportunity to combine my poetry skills with the love of my job. I have written about my own experiences and those of people around me which is how I usually get ideas. This is relevant to me.

Lukaki, I love the ideas expressed, but, imo, just a bit scrambled. If you choose, it could be cleaned up just a bit...this just my opinion. I myself have severe disability which is rapidly worsening, so I hear what you are saying and why so feel so strongly here. Go for it!

I apologize, I think you misunderstood me. I thought it was clear that I meant my opinion of it was not relevant to you. I was not calling into question how valuable this assemblage of empty cliches and terrible rhyme was to you. I know it is, I know it is. Which is why many of us (they're just too polite to tell you) wish to leap off of cliffs. I only pray the rocks at the bottom are sharp enough to finish us off quickly.

If you don't really want people's opinions, and you already agree with yourself 100%, well, then why post it in the forum section? Oh wait, I know - to be told how brilliant and special you are, in particular, because you're fighting for a good cause, which makes whatever you write instantly fabulous. Thank you for reminding me of the rules. Finally, I apologize for being honest. It won't happen again, after this:

By 'concision', I was politely suggesting that you burn it.

I am disabled too, but I can't get past the fourth line before I lose interest. Does that make me a bad disabled person? I'm not sure exactly. But this isn't good, and if this is the application of your "skills" then I think you should try gotpottery.com perhaps making clay bowls is more up your alley?

Hi Lukaki..

This is well written, considering the context in which it was delivered.

But it is too esoteric and turgid for me to follow. No offense intended..I realize this piece is a departure for you.

i work with Special Ed kids (english as a foreign language)
and i'd fly up to Saturn and take a ride on a ring if one of my ex-students would write such a fabulous piece on nurturing others and conquering learning challenges

i think your audience will totally appreciate it - great rhythm, good message.

Thank you all for your comments, I have a lot to take away. I genuinely appreciate all of your comments. To put this in context I was given three hours to write this based on information I was given by the staff to include, so it was a tough challenge and I was completely out of my comfort zone. The outcome is indeed scrambled somewhat. Given more time I could refine this if I thought it was worth it, that's why I posted it on here.

To those who think I should take up pottery: I hope you can take the time to check out my other work, it is varied in style and content, although I would never profess to be a great poet I am certainly not a bad one (all of the time) haha. I am quite aware that my style does not apeal to everyone but as long as it is appreciated by some I will continue.

Look, I apologize for turning polemical with you, I should not have done that. But it seems to me we have a very large problem on this site of coddling questionable writing in favor of building ego and to the detriment of writing itself. Vitriol doesn't solve the problem, of course, nor does handing out sugar plums of praise. I'm not sure how we can collectively find a good middle ground - but I'm still (very) faintly hopeful of the prospect.

This is exactly the sort of thing people in the forums elsewhere are talking about. Thank you, Paul. I appreciate your efforts, however unwitting they may be. You are truly the backbone of the site. I mean that.

There never used to be this much jibing on the site, I have just started using it again and am afraid that this could put new people off using the site. This is a shame because it has been of great use to me in the past and I have had great constructive feedback which is exactly why I have continued to use GP.
I understand that comments can be easily taken the wrong way, as I think I did at the start of this thread. I do appreciate the comments here even the more cutting ones, anything that makes me think about my work in a different way is good. I can choose to take it on board or not, that is my choice.

It's the sarcasm, cryptic language and jibing that really is just a waste of time. I have been guilty of this too in the past and it is doesn't achieve anything but bad feelings. Honest and intelligent feedback is always welcome and I am not easily offended so please keep being honest. Thanks, Lukaki.

lukaki--I have read your stuff before and it is fine and good. Just a couple of bad apples decided to stick to your post with superglue. You see that all other comments are polite and trying to be useful...They decided to attack me in the process!

Paul, you are truly astounding. I was clearly addressing you, not Butterfly. You relentlessly miss the point of every post I've even been involved with you in. You are either intentionally obtuse, and just enjoy casting aspersions at people (you remind me of a rabid dog), or you are really that mentally incompetent. I would like to think the latter, because at least if you're just so stupid that you don't even know you're stupid, it doesn't necessarily make you an asshole. I do not think any reasonable person would interpret my use of 'backbone' in that context to refer back to Gail's Multiple Sclerosis. I don't think you even read the responses to which you charge in blindly like a bull.

I was not attacking L. You need to learn to distinguish between talking about something written by a person, and the person who wrote it. These are not the same things, and it would be helpful if you could learn to make that sort of distinction in your thinking.

If you'd like to continue this delightful little conversation, let's do it off L's thread, yes?
