POET OF THE MONTH/OCTOBER - WON BY LEGGOLAS

5244_197899688480b8018c5b34.jpg

mailgooglecom3.gif

NAME : MARK LEGGE

DATE OF BIRTH : 11th JUNE

LOCATION : STRAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

[7]

I was born as a stag in the Forests of Needwood. Upon reaching maturity, [having lived the life of a rampant buck] I was swiftly felled by the barb of a huntsman’s arrow. My prised, revered antlers were hung upon a local’s stately walls, where I witnessed extravagance and debauchery, enacted upon the stony slabs beneath.

Eventually I was incorporated into the local dance, [whose roving lively ritual prance thrives up until this very day.] Thy ravaged carcass, flung to fertilise, had by now rejuvenated into an acorn, whose initial patient progress flourished into sturdy sprawling branches within the realms of Bagots Park, overshadowing the trials and tribulations of those that [throughout the centuries] have sought the safety, solace or shelter, offered by thy ample renowned regal crown

Alas, a single streak of spite, lit to lance, enforcing premature dismemberment, thus thy desecrated bellowing bowels and branches were distributed throughout the neighbouring community to become, the buttress for the Buttercross, steadfast bearing beams, a chair, a chest, a pew or two, a spindle for the crippled wheel, revived to live life as before, rotating, as us all.

I started writing poetry about 4 years ago. My Inspiration is simply that which inspires. My favourite poets are all those that have the courage to lift up their pen and reveal that which flows from within. My favourite Poems of my own are:

The Dregs of Destiny[8][9]

El Eco de Mi Amor [10]

My Selfish Streak [11]

Oppressed [12]

And their are too many wonderful poems from other Poets to mention.

To all of those who’ve reached this far.

If thy words have roused affect, or generated tear, then I shall deem achievement from this love that I hold dear.

On tongue of land in Southern hands which laps at rivers passing by. From spoken word there came to be, a place they’d know as Harpers Ferry

This poem is the first I ever wrote,

Thy ink flows free
to engage thee
in rhyme,
valid or squib.
So let there be not one amongst who
seeks to guide direction,
hamper rampant progress,
reduce the desired impact
or the volume
of thy nib.

May I extend,
a thank you to resilience,
for in times of perplexity
there is no better friend

POET OF THE MONTH/SEPTEMBER - WON BY ZBIRD

Bonnieface.jpg mailgooglecom6.gif

NAME : BONNIE JOHNSON

DATE OF BIRTH : 2/5/1948

LOCATION : SUMTER, SC

[13]

About Me:

My first, and so far only book of poems “Where Willows Weep” was published by Ye Olde Font Shoppe in 1996. Yes, it is owned and run by varivas who is not only a member of GP, but also my younger sister. Don’t think of it as nepotism, though, as she told me then and still holds true to her integrity, she only publishes quality work. We did a lot of editing before the book was ready.

For three years I hosted an open mic here in Sumter, SC. While it was fun it was also a lot of work and recently I put it on hold for awhile.

When did I first start to write?:

Growing up in Erie, PA there were a lot of long, cold winter days and nights with not a lot to do. My two sisters and I would often challenge each other to write a poem. One would give a title or topic and we would each write around that topic or title. It not only filled the time, but brought out the creative sides in us.

What is my inspiration?

Life itself. There are so many things that bring out a poem. If I see a leaf hanging from a tree, maybe a person sitting alone on a bench, the sound of birds outside my window in the morning, the death of someone close or just something I hear on the news. There are poems all around us, we just have to see them and hear them and put them on paper.

Some of my favorite poets and poems are:

Maya Angelou[14]

Michele Reese - Following Phia

Colin Haskins - Forgiveness Would Come

Victoria Rivas aka varivas[15]

POET OF THE MONTH/AUGUST - WON BY ASH

normal_restaurant0.jpg Ashbadge.gif

NAME : ASHLEY PALOCHAK

DATE OF BIRTH : DECEMBER 3rd, 1985

LOCATION :WASHINGTON DC, METRO AREA

[16]

About Me:

I’m currently a student of communications, trying to make my way into journalism or public relations. I work for the US Air Force, supporting a small shop of weapons experts/goof-offs, which has been the best job I could possibly ask for.

I still have very little experience in the area of writing, but I try a little more every day. I’m a big fan of descriptive language, so I more often appreciate good prose, but poetry is a fun hobby.

Yes, I am a “little young” to be married, but after all, isn’t life best when you live it in the way that makes you most happy?

What Inspired Me to Write?

I wrote my first poem (actually, it was a small book of poems) early in grade school and I enjoyed it so much and got such a great reaction from my teachers, friends, and family, that I decided writing was going to be my favorite thing to do – but that wasn’t enough to keep me at it.

In fact, I did not really write outside of my educational requirements until – more than 10 years later – I experienced a traumatic event and could find no other way to express the fears and anxieties that had grown from the experience.

I pull a lot of ideas and inspiration from my daily life, and even though I’d like to deny it, most of my work is filled with very personal thoughts and emotions, disguised as best as I can help. I pull a lot of influence, especially for short stories and prose, from my favorite novelists and (*blushing*) paperback writers.

Favorite Poets:

Taylor Mali

Sylvia Plath

At GotPoetry:

Scmatsuura [17]

Mayo [18]

Paleface [19]

GraphiteGirl [20]

Hobbies:

I read A LOT – probably more than my family appreciates. I can’t get enough of movies – any kind: old or new, short or long, chick flick or action-packed or horror – LOVE ‘EM! I spend a lot of time seeking out new music and collecting it in my (precious) iPod. I also like to do artsy-fartsy things like draw, or take pictures, or scrapbook – which is almost a combination. Sightseeing is a must-have hobby for anyone living in the vicinity of the District, so I do plenty of that, too.

Likes: A good song; a good book; a good time with my good friends.

Dislikes: Bad drivers; passive-aggressive people; CHORES

Three of My Favorite Poems:

“After Hanshin” [21]

"The Rival" [22]

“How to Write a Political Poem” [23]

POET OF THE MONTH/JULY 2008 - WON BY zhaul

el-zhauly-01c.jpg zhaul-badge.gif

NAME : SAUL HORWITZ

DATE OF BIRTH : OCTOBER 26, 1958

LOCATION: CAMPECHE, MEXICO

http://www.gotpoetry.com/Your_Account/profile=4514.html

ABOUT ME:

Born and raised in Mexico City, I have lived most of my life in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Today I reside in Campeche, Mexico.

I started writing at the age of 13 for my final term and I never stopped writing poetry after that day. I studied literature and poetry theory during middle school. By the age of 17, I had already written over a 1000 poems. Today I have written over 6000 poems in Spanish and over a 100 in English!

I have also designed and written 74 training manuals for different areas in human behavior and business; 4 books (essays) on human behavior and self-improvement method and many short essays on different subjects that have to do with business and human behavior.

After years of searching for the meaning of life, I found my path in helping people to overcome compulsive-obsessive-addictive behaviors. Today, 90% of my time is dedicated pro-bono to help in a rehab center. I also do seminars on dysfunctional families and how to train children to protect themselves against sexual abuse.

What inspired me to write?

I remember being at this party where there was this girl whom I liked a lot. On those days I was pretty shy, so I grabbed a piece of paper, thinking I could write her a letter, and suddenly I was writing the lines short, emulating a poem. I wish I had this poem. Anyway, it felt good to write, and ever since I have been writing mostly about love and relationships.

POET OF THE MONTH/JUNE 2008 - WON BY Blondie

MarkScott186-2S.jpg blondie-badge.gif

NAME: TINA

DATE OF BIRTH: 21st September

LOCATION: ATLANTA, GEORGIA'''''

http://www.gotpoetry.com/Your_Account/profile=Blondie.html

I have been writing Poetry since I was a child in grade school. My grandfather and great-grandfather were both poets and I’m blessed to have a collection of their poetry. I have my great-grandfathers journals from the late 1800’s and they are my most valued treasures. I have always been a hopeless romantic and only in recent years did I get hold of my grandfathers poetry and I came to find out they too wrote of romance and the hearts desire. I guess it runs in the family!

In the last couple years I have dedicated myself fulltime to my writing. I’ve had a few poems published and I’m working on a novel {slowly but surely}. I also enjoy doing open-mic poetry readings and have become a regular at the local bookstore.

I’m inspired to write from my heart, about the love I have known and the love I have witnessed throughout my life. Love comes in many forms and they are all to be remembered. From the giggle of my baby girl, to the graceful aging of my late grandmother, I see love in the eyes and the faces that surround me. And sometimes even in the simple moments I witness between strangers I encounter in everyday life. I’ve only just begun to write what I hold in my heart, and I know I will be writing for many years.

I enjoy many different poets but a few of my favorites are:

Pablo Neruda "From-Twenty Poems of Love"

http://www.gotpoetry.com/Poems/l_op=viewpoems/lid=5871.html

Rainer Maria Rilke “Woman in Love"

http://www.gotpoetry.com/Poems/l_op=viewpoems/lid=26934.html

Sharon Olds "Sex without Love"

http://www.gotpoetry.com/Poems/l_op=viewpoems/lid=6191.html

In my paying job I was an international travel planner for a large Atlanta based company. I have traveled the world and been blessed with a wonderful family and great friends. I have enjoyed being a part of GotPoetry.com and feel lucky to be in such a great community of writers.

My favorite poems are:

Does She Know

Nude Garden

POET OF THE MONTH/MAY 2008 - WON BY badmalthus

IMG_0926.jpg badmalthus-badge.gif

NAME  : HARRY ROUT [36]

Date of Birth: 20/9/1956

I live here in Adelaide and work for the education department in order to keep myself in cash so I can buy a bottle of Jack’s or some good South Australian Wine…….which I think is the best in the world.

I’m a poet and I have been writing poetry for over thirty five years and I hope to die with a strong drink in one hand and a pen in the other! I have had poems published in Australia and Japan. My favorite poet is Charles Bukowski……and if you don’t know who he was…..if you haven’t read any of his work…….then good luck……but I don’t hold out much hope for you.

As far as writers go I’m a big Kurt Vonnegut fan and if you want to read a great living poet….then try out Michael Madsen……yeah…..the American actor……you won’t be able to put him down…..trust me.''

I read a lot of philosophy…..particularly Existentialism and I’m a big Jean-Paul Sartre fan and his work has played a big part in my poetry.

I like people who treat kids with respect and listen to their opinions…. after all kids don’t go round invading other people’s countries. I don’t like people who go round telling other people how they can be better people. I don’t like people who want to live forever and eat bean shoots for breakfast coz they’re scared that death will find them one day too soon.

As for music…..well you can’t go past the great Tom Waits…..who was also heavily influenced by Hank Bukowski.

I am still young enough to know that nothing feels better then the arms of a beautiful woman and for me that is my Carol…..my muse. This lady puts up with my madness on a daily basis and then comes back for more! So you can understand why I love her…..coz she’s crazy. And lastly, what inspires me to write……my very good sense of humor mixed with total absurdity of life on this planet……viola!

Two of my favorite poems:

'SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW' [37]

ALL COMES TO YE WHO WAITS [38]

POET OF THE MONTH - JANUARY 2008 - WON BY JAHNVI

NAME: JAHNVI JAIRAJ

http://www.gotpoetry.com/Your_Account/profile=3728.html

I am nine years old and in 4th grade at school. I don’t know exactly when I started writing, but my earliest literary memory-was letters I used to write to mom. I used to write these notes for her whenever she went out [even if it was only for an hour!]. My mom still has all those notes and she says that one day she is going to post them all up on a website – for the world to see!!!

Since those early times-the main reason for writing has been class projects of one sort or the other.

I don’t know the name of many poets –except for the ones I learn at school. Also I don’t read many poems here [only the ones mom lets me to read!] I love reading books and I especially love to read ENID BLYTON and all of ARCHIES comics. I enjoy playing the piano and I study ballet also. I don’t yet know what I want to be when I grow up – maybe a great pianist or a ballerina or a great poet or a doctor or a scientist or an astronomer or an artist or a fashion designer…………… oh! I want to be so many things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to say THANKYOU to everyone who voted for me in the slam….

To everyone who has read and rated my poems till now. It has encouraged me to write more and more………..

To dad and mom for always, always, always encouraging me in whatever I have done till now………….

To Susan Voth for this great page she has done for me…..

To Tony French [persecuted one] who thought I wrote cool haikus and they could be put up on a site…….

And lastly to Haris [humanicide] – my poems would not have been open for ratings and I wouldn’t have got all the appreciation on this site if it had not been for you!
