Any form of art is subjective. So is poetry. I write poetry for myself. I don't write it for accolades or 10s or stars. If anyone can relate to it that's fine; if not, it has not bothered me. I have had my share of 1s and 2s, 9s and 10s. I think any artist should be open to the views of others and criticisms on your work when you publish it.

I have reached a stage in my life where relationships don't mean anything to me. Not that they did before. But I did try to be present and there is also this role-playing which we all do. I've always believed that the greatest and biggest relationship you can have in life is with your own self. Over the years, my belief in that has been reaffirmed. The people who have come into my life have been transitory.

Three of the winners are writing nonfiction. Hannah Dela Cruz Abrams is writing a memoir, The Following Sea, that explores the lives of her parents, who raised her on a yacht in the South Pacific. Rachel Aviv, who has taught classes on narrative medicine, is working on a book about adolescents and young adults in the pre-stages of schizophrenia.
