Boston Area Poet, Enzo Surin, Aims For Higher Ground
News in Poetry A keen observer of the small and significant issues facing our world and our own cities, poet Enzo Surin has just had his chapbook collection of poetry published, by Finishing Line Press.

Associate Professor and award-winning poet Dorianne Laux says “Enzo Surin writes, ‘I guess I'll keep on writing until my lines can stop a bullet’ and we're grateful for his commitment, for his willingness...these are bold, necessary poems.” Award-winning author and poet J.D. Scrimgeour says of these poems “James Baldwin tells us that love is difficult. Surin testifies to that, and, like Baldwin, he also testifies to love’s necessity. This is poetry that matters.”

Higher Ground is a small yet powerful collection of poetry that speaks on many levels of racial, social, economical, and spiritual struggle, from the streets of the inner city to the halls of higher education. Written just months before the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Higher Ground seeks to uplift the spirit and liberate the heart, crafted in the rich traditions of jazz, blues and hip hop.

Enzo Surin is a literacy advocate and is currently employed as a library assistant at Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, MA. He also volunteers as editor of Joy of Writing, a literary journal for Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle. His poetry is forthcoming and has appeared in The Caribbean Writer, Soundings East, Pine Island Journal of New England Poetry, Red River Review, Tight, among other literary journals. He has participated in poetry readings in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Massachusetts and currently resides in Boston, MA, where he looks to continue his involvement with literacy efforts in the inner city.

The cover art for Mr. Surin’s book features a design by Lila Khan.

I have read this collection and he is right on the pulse of the inner city with his poems. This collection of poems is really powerful and I only wish it was a little longer because I wanted to read more. These poems are poems that you might want to read more than once.
