RZS’s pick this month is Vespula Vulgaris by Salinger:

Vespula vulgaris
by salinger

The boy paid no particular attention
to the pear tree that he hid behind
sprawling branches
twisted above his head
or the legion of
yellow jacket wasps
buzzing in drunken circles
around fallen
fermenting summertime fruit
turning brown on the ground
nor did he bother to contemplate
the rough reptilian bark slipping beneath
tufts of grass becoming root
nerve tendril clutching the earth like
wooden shocks of lightening
frozen in time
the fact that he had
his father’s chin, his grandfather’s wit
his mother’s almond eyes
his brother’s Swiss army knife
illicitly in his pocket
and the family posture
shoulders sloped as if by weight
never crossed his mind
the boy did not notice the curl of dust
kicked from behind automobile
headed to horizon
the driver in yellow sundress
determined to escape
and never come back this time
or the whistle of the gopher
startled by the car’s passing
a full moon
cut from translucent tissue
still visible in the daytime sky
went equally ignored
the flash of slick tanned skin
of black haired
neighbor girl
skinny-dipping
had become the entire universe
to him

www.gotpoetry.com/Poem...11171.html

RZS says: “I love the way this poem completely encapsulates a moment in time and the acute hyper-awareness of intense desire. The well-chosen title hints at the sting that can come with the fruition of that desire. The focus and articulation are superb.”

John chooses this poem from site regular graphitegirl:

Rain Shadow Flu
by graphitegirl

The nose of Puget Sound
sneezes droplets of fine mist
over Seattle’s head.

Gesundheit!

A continuous swarm of wet
gray bees covers the sky.
New days merge into
old months
an endless season of
wiper blades.
Emerald showers clock
in overtime.
A thin silver lined smile
leaks a steady drip, drip
.. splash
on the sidewalk’s inhabitants.

I am invisible in my early
morning commute.
Soaked,
I dissolve under the weather.
My umbrella grows moss
as I wait in the coffee line.

Anna’s pick is this one from silent_lotus:

Kyoto Moss
by silent_lotus

www.gotpoetry.com/Poem...26389.html

Says Anna: “I like the way it is presented, then the depth to the frugal words in the poem. I learnt the beauty of silence between words by reading the works of silent_lotus”.

Now for the only blog pick this month, I choose 3ringcrashpad’s ‘Communication’

My intuition is strong. I can sniff out a lie before it ever gives off a scent and perceive someone’s insecurity long after its trail has grown stale. It’s my strength. I don’t think I was born with this ability but rather, I believe that it was learned.

From a very young age I had to find creative ways to communicate my needs and desires. Words didn’t work. They were ignored or discarded like chicken bones. To say how I felt or to ask questions for clarification was an utter inconvenience to the adults in my life and so I had to adapt. My passion and curiosity for learning didn’t allow me to stuff my emotions, and so I molded them in to beautiful glass windows through which I could view the world. I identified with feelings and imagined everyone experienced life through them whether they were aware of it or not. I developed my own way of communicating with people. Without words, I formed an acute sense of others’ emotions and feelings. I learned to read body language, tone of voice, gestures, eyebrows, hints and even sighs. Human emotions are powerful and cannot be hidden; eventually, they always ooze out of the pores on to the flesh and become visible. Subconsciously, I assumed that I could remain secure if I could develop the ability to see these emotions that seeped out of the soul of others, and I became an expert at anticipating someone’s feelings and desires. At times it was an immense burden but at other times, it enabled me to experience such a deep and soulful connection with another person that words felt like a mere inconvenience, proving the chicken bone theory true…for a time.

It wasn’t until years later that I learned how important those bones really are - that they are what holds the meat of conversations together. They are the strength in an argument and the skeleton of communication. Without them, my connections were only perceived. Without them, I couldn’t define anything. Without them, there was no documentation that any of my experiences were real. The epiphany came when I was able to use words to infuse my experience in to another’s heart. My previous form of relating was strengthened with the use of vowels and metaphors and words. I knew that if I could learn how to use them, I could be more effective in not only perceiving the feelings of others, but having others perceive me and my feelings with less error. Wow. Now that is connection.

Our next pick comes from AshesRW:

The Man That Poetry Made
by Skylark

The man that poetry made stands luminous
on the broken corners of history’s suicidal cravings,
he watches splashing in the street
birds cleaning their feathers inside
the crystal flow of words he gave them,

he is a vintage wine now
traveling with ease over the tongues
of other people’s intentions,
he is a quilt
made of one billion black hands
spread like guarantees from a single living God
over the heads of the misbegotten.

The man that poetry made wonders
on which day will he finally recite his soul.
Ask him who his mother is
and he will sing for you memories
of bosom-heavy haikus
filling his mouth with the milk and nectar
of joy neverdying.
Ask about his father
and he will boast about a ballad
that thundered all the way
from Spain to Zaire
bouncing him like a sack full of sonnets
upon his broad whistling shoulders.

This man that poetry made stumbles barefoot
through the city, a huge blue ribbon wrapped
around one big toe, a small pink one tied
to the other, ragged jeans loose
upon free-verse hips, fluorescent eyes blinking
surrealistic kisses of negritude revisited––
To the woman confused
by his lust for peace
he begs “forgive me lovely genius
I was not born as you were born,
my blood was written
by a different kind of coupling.”
To the man frustrated
by his lack of animalia
he sang, “Beauty is a thing finer
than exalted fears of actual love.”

The man that poetry made sometimes
blows himself to pieces with bombs
made from metaphors, he enjoys watching
the words that shape his life
scatter like golden ashes of imagination
then one by one float back down to earth
covering him with forms and meanings
he never knew existed.
People passing the corner
where he stands luminous and throbbing
rarely see a man at all.
They look at the man that poetry made
and see a public toilet
or a burning bush flaming in the most unlikely place.
Sometimes they see him as a rare jewel
and snatch him up before anyone else
can look. He is always curious riding along
inside the pockets of strangers
wondering how they shall react
when they see him for what he is,
and he reveals, with
love lighting up his every cell
exactly who they are.

(from I MADE MY BOY OUT OF POETRY)

From AshesRW: “Love the metaphors and the tone and . . . well, everything.”

Mayo’s pick this month is a poem/haiku by Spence:

Evolution Of Another Perfect Crime! (6 part whodunit haiku for Harry)
by spence

Egg man takes a toke
Precariously balanced
At the edge of wall

Blurry perception
Wobbled to the cobbled floor
Had a smashing time!

Accident or design?
Drug Induced or suicide?
Fell or pushed to his death?

Kings men on horses
At the scene of the crime to
Piece it together

Cracking yolks about
How Humpty was pushed to fall
Didn't fit at all!

'Flyaway Bird' Peter
Knows more than he's letting on
Cuckoo's nest now empty!

www.gotpoetry.com/Poem...31427.html

Says Mayo: “What I loved about this piece is that it reminded me that poetry can be fun even when fitting it into a form. I, also, really like how spence jumps feet first into serious subjects as well. This poet shows flexibility and a desire for growth with his poetry. It has been fun watching his work develop. And he also seems to be a truly well-intentioned man.”

My pick for this month is winterchild’s ‘ Leaving Waihopai’

Leaving Waihopai
by winterchild

how beautiful....

the rain
as it rattles
like marbles
hailing down
on the tin roof..

the light
eerie
grey
luminous

and the
lack of light
mystical
in its
melancholia

the whisper of
the rainbow maker
in the absence of
the suns heat
to free it from stillness
and to let flow
it's colours...

the comforting hiss
of the flames
pulsing their heat
from the heart
of the room

the gentle little gale breaths
in the glen...
making the
cypress trees dance
their wild waltz

the hills
glaring down at me
in their cold
disapproval
of my
betrayal
of those
who kept me
safe

and my
heart
battered
but still
burnished
bright

and
my soul
flying
freely
uncaptured
still.....

I liked the sublime imagery in this poem and the warm image of home.

Finally for our haiku/senryu pick – AshesRW has two this time

Online Oddities
by sinema

Odd, how we can miss
someone we have never met
when our screens are blank

AND

She's highly strung
by lordfuznut

six strings amplified
she makes a beautiful noise
with her boxless voice
