My my my, how time flies! As you may have noticed, I've been slacking off on these weekly emails... I hope you all had a filling holiday: in mind, body and spirit... but mostly the body... like the stomach part. yep.

There are so many rad things happening here... how would you know
about them if it wasn't for this email? Think of all the amazing

9pm Cerberus Shoal, Micah Blue Smaldone, Fern Knight, P.G. Six and
Tarpigh
CERBERUS SHOAL are a six-piece collective from Portland, ME. Thier
music bridges the most unique gaps between world beat and non-western
composition. The sound draws from equal parts improvisation and
minimalist textures, creating free-flowing polyrhythms for
percussion, guitars, piano, horns, chimes, bells and anything else
lying around. Truly surreal. "Born MICAH BLUE SMALDONE in the summer
of 1978, in a rural New York town near the shores of Lake Champlain,
his family moved to southern Maine in the early 80's where he whiled
his way through school, duly picking up the guitar in his early
teens. A founding member of Maine's seminal political punk band the
Pinkerton Thugs, Micah's involvement in a then thriving Boston punk
scene brought him into the lineup of several Boston area bands,
including garage rockers the Shods, and the long lived hardcore band
Out Cold, with whom he toured the States, UK, and Europe several
times. A melancholy spell in the winter of 2002 found Micah
withdrawing from the bands, and the public eye as well, immersing
himself in prewar music and playing his guitar day in and day out."
P.G. SIX: (real name Pat Gubler, once of influential freak folk
ensemble Tower Recordings). On The Well of Memory (his second
release) there is an eclectic variety of instruments, from a Ukelin
to a harp. But there is also an intimate sparsity which gives the
impression that P.G. Six is performing in front of you. The Well of
Memory contains many delicately beautiful numbers, notably Come
in/The Winter it is Past and Old Man on the Mountain, both
traditional folk covers and very haunting. This atmosphere is carried
throughout the album, rendering it as a personal experience. In an
age stuffed with consumerism, war and hate, one needs musicians like
P.G. Six in order to prove that honesty and simplicity should be more
prominent in our lives. FERN KNIGHT from Providence, RI is an
ensemble formed from members of the Baker Street Kollektief, fronted
by guitarist/cellist and singer Margaret Wienk, who creates delicate,
organic acoustic songs orchestrated by layers of accordion/harmonium/
electronics drones, pysch-tinged strings, canonic vocals, harp, bells
and percussion and singing saw.

9pm Linden Drive, Route .44 and Fancy Trash
SHAUN HAGUE was born and raised in Massachusetts. Picking up a guitar
at fourteen, he was named "The Best Young Guitarist in New England"
by The House of Blues only 3 years later. Shaun, following his desire
to perform, moved to Los Angeles. At nineteen he joined together with
another talented musician and formed the popular LA rock band, Fader.
After touring up and down the California music scene -and gaining a
large following- Fader was given the title of "The Best Unsigned Band
in Los Angeles" by Gibson guitars in late 2004. After departing from
Fader, Shaun was quickly picked up by well know blues/rock guitarist
Kenny Wayne Shepherd to back him for his headlining cross country
tour. After being with Kenny Wayne for almost a year, he is now off
tour and back home on the east coast in Providence. After much
persuading by fans of both Fader and Kenny Wayne, Shaun has decided
to pursue his much anticipated solo career. In finding his way back
to New England, Shaun met the "Bierce Brothers" (Bill and Ben) and
Chris Wilson ALL on Myspace. Thus forming LINDEN DRIVE!!! FANCY TRASh
formed in August 2002 when Singer/Guitarist Dave Houghton moved from
Boulder, CO to Northampton, MA and began playing with upright bassist
Joshua Thayer. Not much later, drummer Ben Laine joined the group,
his diverse and melodic rhythms completing an already earthy and
developed sound. Fancy Trash works the line between rock and folk,
blending a non-traditional sensibility with the tradition of acoustic
instruments to make something unique. Spazzy folk-tinged acoustic
indy rock. "The roots of ROUTE .44 lie within the heart and mind of
Ian and Matt. Originally a duo of acoustic guitar and saxophone, they
made their name around town as dark, brooding and minimalistic.
Playing cafs and small venues, the response was always positive and
inevitably audiences continued to ask "When you gonna' put a band
behind you?". After much debate, the decision was made ... "A band
must be formed". Over the course of the next year members were added,
members were fired, members went into rehab and one became
impregnated. But all along a strong core of music was being written.
Just about one year into their musical foray, Route .44 has become
more an orchestra then a band ... a modular entity that can be broken
into any number of components depending on the gig. The core eight
members hail from every corner of the country. From Seattle to L.A.
to Missouri, each member brings a vast amount of musical knowledge
and experience, and most importantly a shared vision. With influences
ranging from Rockabilly to Techno, the unique sound that you hear in
Route .44 is the sound of 8 lives culminating within a musical
adventure, unifying to create one sound which they can call their own."

9pm KPMPBW, Josephine Foster, Glenn Jones and Geoff Mullen
KPMPBW: "Kevin Park (trumpet) is a piano tuner. He resides in Harlem.
Michael Plunkett (rototoms) has played music in New York City since
1998. Mr. Plunkett is from the suburbs of Boston, and he currently
teaches literature in the South Bronx. Brendon Wood (guitar) is from
Rhode Island. A member of the Boston based group, Devil Music,
www.devilmusic.org. The result of the music created by KPMPBW, brings
together an eclectic mix of styles and influences, transforming
everyday sounds into beautifully serene and nightmarishly bleak
landscapes. The music is lucidly experimental; it exploits
electronics, drones, beats, and the idea of a bird in flight
listening to his or her iPod." JOSEPHINE FOSTER, from Chicago:
"Renaissance folk siren. Please do not burn at stake !! Usually when
someone tells you an artist has a "great voice" it's by way of
apology for heinous music. Josephine Foster is a rare exception to
this rule - she has a truly wonderful voice and extraordinary songs.
Indeed, she sounds not unlike '70S hippy-folk icon Joni Mitchell, but
with the sunny Californian "vibe" replaced by that of plague-ravaged
15th-century England - particularly impressive considering she's from
Chicago. The likes of'The Siren's Admonition' are more spell than
song and the sort of thing that'd have you burnt at the stake in less
enlightened times, such is their unearthly beauty. May we recommend a
similar fate for the first person to describe her as "the female
Devendra Banhart"?" 9/10 (NME, UK) "Most folks know GLENN JONES as
guitarist extraordinaire for Cul de Sac, in which his idiosyncratic
blend of surf, Middle Eastern, Americana and acid guitar innovations
are a signature of the band's much-ballyhooed sound. Across the
better part of a decade, electric guitar (and the effects hybrid of
his own creation, The Contraption) has been Jones' weapon of choice,
but few people are aware that long before Cul de Sac was born, Jones
played the acoustic guitar exclusively for many years. From the time
his father bought him his first axe at age 14, Jones never even
picked up an electric until the wave of punk rock broke over his
consciousness at the ripe age of 29. Although eventually seduced by
electricity, Jones never escaped his roots. A scholar of sorts of the
acoustic steel string tradition, Jones has written extensively on the
subject, as can be found in the wave of Robbie Basho and John Fahey
reissues on Fantasy (not to mention the great essay on Fahey that
accompanies his final album, Red Cross). Jones befriended his idol
John Fahey in the mid-70's, eventually collaborating with him via Cul
de Sac (The Epiphany of Glenn Jones, Thirsty Ear 1996). Upon Fahey's
passing in 2001, Jones went back to the acoustic guitar with renewed
earnest, hints of which can be found inoculating Cul de Sac's 2003
masterpiece Death of the Sun and their soundtrack album, The
Strangler's Wife. At long-last, the time is nigh for Jones to release
his debut solo album. This is the Wind That Blows it Out - Solos for
6 & 12 String Guitar is a collection of stylistically ambitious,
utterly sublime acoustic steel-string compositions, proving beyond a
shred of doubt that Jones is of a rare class of modern compositional
guitarists in today's burgeoning avant folk scene." Providence's
GEOFF MULLEN bends and bows and scrapes and strikes...acoustic guitar
pulled into a world of gentle bubbly noise. mmmm.

9pm Mahi Mahi, Sweetthieves, Drab and Tennis
MAHI MAHI: Flopping and sputtering forth Robitussin chugged synth
rock, Mahi Mahi carves out its own spot in the Providence scene.
Comparisons to the Screamers, Devo and Suicide are not far off yet
should be taken with a grain of salt as Mahi Mahi plays in a ballpark
all their own, moving the synth rock genre further into the unknown,
by removing what little pop sensibility still lingered on the
fringes. Beats both analog and digital pound away while synths gurgle
and hum. Heavily manipulated vocals sound as though they are sung
through a Vocoder and are at times so mutilated that they simply act
as a third synthesized element. When the lyrics are understandable
they are delivered with a monotone deadpan, which feels right at home
with the emotionless artificiality of the other instruments. These
sounds combine to create a music that references, synth-rock, 80s
pop, Industrial and at times even Hip-Hop. SWEETTHIEVES: "This trio
of sweetness comes from the Northeast and resides in a place called
Providence, Rhode Island. Dave Martinka (guitar/vocals) and Jay Mayoh
(drums), after playing in bands off an on in high school got together
with bassist Hilary Jones, who played guitar in two previous bands.
She had been a frequenting customer at a local guitar shop where she
was asked to join Sweetthieves. Everything worked out and the trio
has been together since the summer of 2003. Sweetthieves are an
experimental indie-rock band bringing together the rawness and
production of bands like Shellac, The Jesus Lizard, Slint, and Drive
Like Jehu, all while combining beautiful intricate melodies into the
mix. Jones and Martinka are dual vocalists, they go back and forth
with each other, and when Jones layers the lead vocals it's
beautifully haunting. The bass rolls, pounds, and chops away with the
speeding and frantic drumming while the guitar gives you quick
curling jabs, and then the anticipated energy is all let loose and
released. If there was a power outage in Providence, Sweetthieves
could be called upon to light the entire city. I can imagine there
live shows would be really fun, and I bet theyre already stirring
up places all over Providence." DRAB was formed in the summer of 2001
in Tanya Pearson's bedroom in Bristol, RI. She recorded a twenty-song
demo entitled Dinosaur World, which was released by a small
independent label, Easton Punk Records. The single Dinosaur World was
included on a compilation of Boston, Providence and New Hampshire's
biggest local acts including Toxic Narcotic and Midnight Creeps. It
was at that point Tanya began recruiting friends to join Drab and
they began playing live shows in 2002 with a drummer, keyboardist and
bassist. TENNIS is apparently from Boston, but his website is not
displayable without stupid plugins, so who knows? http://

9pm Akron/Family, Callers and Quaky Gum
AKRON/FAMILY (Young God Records) are four extremely nice, sincere and
well-mannered young men from rural America who came to NYC (in 2002)
to make music, hoping to find a thread of real magic still winding
through this citys music scene. They certainly did just that, but
they did it by retreating into a tiny Brooklyn apartment, where they
made their own world instead, in complete and stubborn isolation.
They proceeded (while simultaneously growing alarmingly long beards
and developing a playful but hermetic quasi-religious/sonic worldview/
creed known as AK or sometimes AK-AK) to make several
albums worth of recordings on crude home equipment the material
compulsively chopped, spliced, and orchestrated into fractal jewels
of song and schismatically opposed atmospheres. CALLERS: Ryan Seaton
and Sara Lucas out of New Orleans / Providence from Missouri /
Arkansas. QUAKY GUM is the solo project of Alec Thibodeau of
Stingbuilder and Noney fame.

5-6:30pm Zox (private acoustic show)
A private party for ticket holders for the ZOX show at Lupo's,
organized by ZOX and WBRU. Admission is FREE, but you must show your
Lupo's ticket at the door. Since the release of their debut album,
Take Me Home (Armo), in 2003, Providence, RI based ZOX has emerged as
one of the most promising and original new bands on the New England
scene. With Soundscan sales of over 12,000 copies, the ZOX debut is
also one of the biggest local success stories in recent years.
Characterized by blistering violin melodies, a pulsing backbeat,
sophisticated arrangements, and the poignant and personal songwriting
of a hapless romantic, the band's unique sound has won followers
across the tyrannical boundaries of genre. Described by some as a
cross between The Cure, Fugazi, The Police, and Beethoven, ZOX's
distinctive style is at once remarkably innovative and surprisingly
familiar. www.zoxband.com/ www.wbru.com/
7-9pm DRUMMING CIRCLE
UPSTAIRS GALLERY, 2nd FLOOR. AS220 Drumming Circle - Come and
experience the incredible joy of drumming, by learning and playing
rhythms from around the world. Drums provided or bring your own. All

9pm Nice-Ups, The Unsettled Dispute and Expandid
THE NICE-UPS from Providence: Keepin' it true to the roots of
Jamaican music, the Nice Ups play a set made up of Ska, Rocksteady,
and Reggae with hints of Jazz, Soul, Lounge, Doo Wop and Latin
blended in. Rhode Island's THE UNSETTLED DISPUTE, halfway between The
Minutemen and Radiohead. The brainchild of a clinically insane
mastermind E(mu) the L(un). Catchy songs and insightful lyrics.
EXPANDID: In January of 2002, three students at SUNY Potsdam met in a
winterim philosophy class, and a date to jam was set. Chris
introduced Dan to the group and within the next two weeks, they
learned and co-wrote/arranged about a dozen of Mikes original
songs. By the end of the month, gigs were scheduled and it was
understood among everyone involved that this was something unusual.
Plans to make a demo turned into plans to make an album, and soon
they decided to move to Providence, RI where expandid is currently
playing in support of their debut album, "Required Listening".
