Lisa King, founding Slam Poet dead at 45 [updated 2-17-06]
Poet Lisa King, a member of the 1993 National Championship Slam Team and an individual Boston Slam Champion has passed away at her home in Sommerville, MA. She was 45 and will be sadly missed. The performance poetry community is in shock. One of Lisa's friends has asked to help spread the word because it was hard to know everyone who might've been acquainted with Lisa over the years. The initial report was that she had died from heart failure sometime over the course of last weekend when we had the blizzard here in the Northeast. Lisa had also been coping with a dibilitating back injury for several years. Friends are also trying to plan a memorial service for Lisa at a future date -- to be determined. The website for Keohane Funeral Home, has more details: http://www.keohane.com/

The following is a signature poem of Lisa's:
Bring Them Back!
i want to wash myself clean in the blood of saints
the unknown martyrs
the innocent young
i want to swim in their blood and piss
to show them that i am not afraid
of the bodily fluids
that have become the poison of my generation
i would roll in semen of a thousand dead brothers
i will tongue kiss a million prostitutes
drawing the last drop of saliva from behind rotting teeth
i will suck the blood out of the syringes of every dusty junkie
i would stitch my skin onto all the quilts
that stretch from here to washington d.c.
just to hear sylvester sing again
to see a new mapplethorpe photo
to watch arthur ashe march in the streets
with haitian refugees
to know steven lawrence's laugh
as we lift a six-pack from a party
to bring back rock hudson
so he can piss on ronald reagan
and make that motherfucker remember
that he is personally responsible
for the deaths of tens of thousands
to bring back liberace
so he can shove a crystal candelabrum up george bush's ass
until that bastard screams
i'm racist and homophobic
and that's why i did nothing about AIDS
i would do all this and more
just to slam the door on this insidious disease
so i can stop
watching my friends die
so bigots disguised as religious leaders will stop
claiming to know the truth about AIDS
the truth about AIDS is
if jesus were here today his blood would be tainted
and you would call him
unclean
jerry falwell
you would call him
enemy
pat robertson
you would both try to raise money
to buy the nails

Jack, It's Jackie LISA'S MOM Thank you for getting out as much about Lisa as you can. She would be so surprized a the out pouring of love as she thought she had been forgotten by most Slammers because of her pain and lack of being able to hit the scene. You of all can remember Lisa at a very young age at the Gladstone on Sunday mornings she thought this was the greatest. Hope to see you at the services.

I started reading out in Boston in 1993 and Lisa always supported me. I had the honor of writing and reading with her. My fondest memory though has to be when I ran into Lisa at a Patti Smith show at a church in cambridge and of course were able to share our awe of all that is Patti. Lisa will always be the fiercest slam poet punk rock mama and overall fierce spirit. I know she would want me to keep on writing.
