Night Club by the River

We drank until we talked too loudly
for anyone to pay attention,
inevitably reaching that point in the night
where our faces grew old
and the river became too meaningful.
It would lap against our sunburnt thoughts
with its tide of beer cans and plastic bags
until it would threaten to rip us away
but seeing the danger you would yawn
and with your hand on my back
you would usher me towards sleep and say
“There'll be no swimming tonight.”
