TCAN launches Spoken Arts open mic, "SpeakEasy!" in Natick
Current Poetic Events SpeakEasy! Open Mic begins October 3
The art of the word takes center stage at TCAN

Poets, playwrights, and lovers of improvisation will have a night to call their own at The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) starting on Tuesday, October 3. A complement to this autumn’s Tuesday night improvisational theater class, SpeakEasy! is TCAN’s new open mic for the spoken arts.

The open mic will be held at TCAN from 7:30 to 9:30 pm on the first Tuesday of the month from October to December. Presenters will be limited to five minutes for one person and ten minutes for a group, with a PG-13 rating for material. Admission is $5, and is free to TCAN members.

SpeakEasy! was developed to provide actors, writers and poets, playwrights, comedians and improvisers with a forum of their own, and the opportunity to receive feedback and support by presenting their work before an audience. The open mic is the brainchild of TCAN Players Board members Rosann Santorelli, Karen Wagner, and Gail Weston-Roberts, following the launch of Karen’s improv class at TCAN in the fall of 2005.

TCAN’s Improv Workshop for Adults begins on the evening of Tuesday, October 10. In the workshop, instructor Karen Wagner helps students develop and refine their acting abilities as well as comfort onstage. Karen has degrees in theatre and education, and studied improv at The Second City in Chicago. Tuition for the eight-session class, which is limited to ten students, is $160.

For more information on Speak Easy! or the Improv Workshop, please call the TCAN Box Office at 508.647.0097.

The Center for Arts in Natick (www.natickarts.org) is a 270-seat performing arts venue located at 14 Summer Street in downtown Natick. The TCAN Box Office (tel 508.647.0097) is open Tuesday-Saturday from 12.00 noon to 6.00 pm. Discounts are available for seniors, students, and TCAN members. TCAN is wheelchair accessible.

In 2005 TCAN received one of the 27th Annual Massachusetts Historical Commission’s Preservation Awards for the restoration and adaptive reuse of Natick’s Central Firehouse building. Since its restoration in 2003, the 1875 Firehouse has become the premier regional arts venue in Metrowest Boston.
