Staff Picks for October 2009
Staff Picks This month the spotlight is on two forms of poetry - Quintana and Magus invented by two talented poets at GP - Huberjack and lordfuznut.

QUINTANA - Based on quintains (5-line stanzas), the quintana uses classic meter (see "meter") and a set rhyming pattern. What sets the quintana apart from other quintain poems is its unique handling of its last line in each stanza. Themes are not specifically set by the form, though a poignant description of the world is preferable to internalized subjects.

The fifth line of each stanza can have different aspects than the first four, but the meter and length of fifth lines must correspond to all of the other fifth lines. There is no upper limit as to number of stanzas, but the minimum is two to insure a fifth-line pattern.

The standard rhyming pattern for a quintana is:

a-b-a-b-i .. c-d-c-d-i .. e-f-e-f-i .. g-h-g-h-i

or some variations:

a-b-a-b-i .. c-d-c-d-i .. e-f-e-f-j .. g-h-g-h-j
a-a-b-b-i .. c-c-d-d-i .. e-e-f-f-j .. g-g-h-h-j
x-a-x-a-e .. x-b-x-b-e .. x-c-x-c-e .. x-d-x-d-e ('x' lines do not rhyme)

Many other rhyming variations are allowed as long as there are rhyming lines and they don't conflict with quintana's guidelines.

Example: Dormant.

MAGUS POETRY - 2 Lines: 8 Syllables to each line.

Theme: Prima Facie, unconnected ideas; nature & humanity as per the root forms of Haiku & Senryu. Title is not necessary.

Example:

tonight I must write for my life;
naked, without any shadows

Now over to the poems/blogs chosen for this month. The first pick for this month is To be bored godholy by bfaulkner.

To be bored godholy

Getting pelvic
With Turgid sentence structure
--Coming up empty—
A pair of evil little trolls
made me diagram sentences.
Maudlin tendencies
scrolling across my cerebral cortex—
Fancy semantic crap!
I don’t write bad poetry.

It is seldom that broken fingers poem makes the pics' list, since it is a difficult style to judge. this poem not only made me laugh, but showed very well how to use the right tools (in our poetry world words are the tools) to get the point across. Well done! - Bogeyman.

The next one is A Baby Gone In Washington by wolfinwindow.

A Baby Gone In Washington

A shrill scream female
I was picking apples in Washington
along the Okanogan river.
"What Happened?" -"Que Pasa?-
I asked all day long
no one would say.
After work we all walked back
to camp
apple picker and tomato picker
alike, from different fields
I see so many
sad dark faces
"Que Pasa, por favor?" I ask
in my meager Spanish
A young woman burst into
heart wrenching sobs
she buries her face
and runs to her cabin
Por fovor, Que Pasa? I plead
I beg old
Rosa who picks in her apron
I know her well, I
gave her recipes for pie
She tells me in half
Spanish, half english
The tomato tractor driver
drove over maria's baby boy
he was sleeping
he was eight months old
Maria,
was
illegal
and they are sending her home.

"This poem has haunted my thoughts since I first read it. The keenly rendered vignette appears simple at first glance, but reveals disturbing truths at its core. Nicely done" - RZS.

The third pick is from Old Masters - Superfluous Advice by Dorothy Parker.

Superfluous Advice

Should they whisper false of you.
Never trouble to deny;
Should the words they say be true,
Weep and storm and swear they lie.

"This wry and world-weary piece seems delicious to me" - Loisseau.

I really like some of this poet's writes - electrictiger.

Moon Poetry I

Moon Poetry II

Moon Poetry III

"Wonderful imagery and some good metaphors".

My blog pick for this month is thoughts by OhRedKite.

thoughts

They sat with their backs against each other. A silhouette of a slouching "K" with two pairs of eyes and one pair of tears. Together on the dock, they looked like a sore thumb amidst the bright fluorescent colors on a painter's palette. The pond was still and no sign of dried flakes remained on the echo-laden surface to mix with the moon's white.
~ ~ ~
"I'm going for a swim. Care to join me?". "No, I'm good. You go on ahead." The electric buzz paid no attention to their conversation and continued to hum away at some off-beat tune. "Quit bein' a wuss!".
"You know I don't like swimming here." he retorted. "You suck. Live a little!" Colour waxed on his face from the splash, melting with the ones already on his cheeks. "'Kay." but the reply was muffled by several feet of water.
============

A bear had broken into a cottage and slept upon a rug in front of the fireplace. The twisting light leaps, caressing the bear as if the dead lover's skin could move.

"Its always nice to put down random thoughts on paper. Thoughts, dreams - they all would mean something or the other to the reader when its put down on paper and shared. The thoughts here - each one of them did speak to me. Thanks for sharing them."

The last pick for this month is a tanka Farewell Mary Travers by Zbird.

Farewell Mary Travers

She entered our lives
singing Blowin' in the Wind,
left on a jet plane.
Touched our hearts and changed our lives
so, don't think twice, it's alright.

That is all for this month. Shall be back next month with more poems, blogs, poets.
