WHY DO MAIN STREAM ACADEMIC POETRY COMMUNITIES DISTANCE
THEMSELVES FROM SPOKEN WORD ARTIST AND SLAM POETS.
A Ghetto-torial By Michael Guinn-MSW March 13th 2007

There seems an utter disdain for spoken word artist because they are seen as un disciplined and only trash the art of poetry.
The topic has sparked a huge debate here in Texas and as a result we are having a POETRY COMMUNITY WIDE TOWN HALL MEETING ON APRIL 1st.
I was a poet long before I was a spoken word artist.
So I take particular offense to the biased, cliquish arrogant behavior that is expressed towards my fellow performance poets, spoken word artist just because they SLAM or present their work in a manner that is not traditional.
To me it goes against Freedom of speech and slef expression which is the very core of the oral tradition.
I guess the mainstream arts community feels threatened by the attention given spoken word artist by such outlets as HBO, BET and other outlets.... nationally.
The energy, the passion, the pure power we bring to the stage through our words is nothing short of a lyrical transformation. One that tradiitonal poets sometime fail to accomplish.
for more on this visit my blog...... up in a few days... check out the www.thewritersgarret.org

And stay tuned to www.mikeginn.com for more on this topic from the country's foremost advocates for social justie through the art of poetry and spoken word. Michael Guinn ( 817 ) 412-3964 for questions or email... jordanmichaelg@ yahoo.com

DALLAS POETRY SLAMS REVITALIZED

Slam poetry will explode every Friday night as two Dallas venues go head to head and pump out some of our nation's best spoken word artists.

After enduring a two month hiatus, the Dallas Slams will resume at a new location, The Soda Gallery ( somewhere in OakCliff ) and hosted by the Bad Boy Duo of Militant X Amerikka and RockBaby.

Well into their second successful year, the Poetry Grind at Pugley's Library ( I-35 & Walnut Hill ) competes on a new stage, on a new night, and hosted by Bob "Whoppeecat" Stephenson and "Konnichiwa" Zach Schrotter.
Sign-ups at both venues begin at about 7:00 pm and an Open-Mic segment will launch the slams.
