( 2 )BERZERKELEY POETRY SLAM -Every Wednesday.
Charles Ekabhumi & Christian check in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~
--------THIS WEEK: Themed Open Slam! $150 In Cash
Prizes! Live Jazz, Hot Pizza, and Cool Irish Beer!
----THE THEME: "Cover Slam", emceed by Christian
Drake. Read a poem by someone else, or a poem by
someone else IN the slam and win extra prizes!
---Featuring: Stephen Meads is a regular at our
slam ( he started in Berkeley! ) and a vet of the San
Francisco slam team. He has been called "Emo" and
"Little Stevie", but he actually towers over the
competition with powerful poems on large personal
issues like identity, death, love and loss. Does
that sound unfamiliar? Perhaps it is because his
poems are cleverly disguised as pseudo-nursery
rhymes about undersea animals, orange cupcakes, &
Star Wars. Believe it or not, this is his first
full Berkeley feature, so come out and support one
of our own!
---Christian checks in: "Mix It Up: The 07 Bay
Area Cover Slam! Here are the rules:"
--"The slam will be open to all, but preference
will be given to poets covering other poets. You
may cover any poet's work. However, in lieu of a
"Word of the Day," poets will be given one bonus
point for each cover poem they perform, but two
bonus points if that poet is in attendance. Poets
can gain bonus points in either or both rounds."
--"No prize for third place. Second place takes
$20. First place takes $100. And the author of the
highest-scoring poem of the night takes home $30,
provided they are in attendance."
--"So ask your fellow poets for copies of their
poems today! This is a chance to have fun with
each others' work and celebrate NorCal poetry
before we head to compete against each other again
in Big Sur. I'd like to see some unexpected covers.
Mark States covering Kat Dietrich, or Dahled
covering Sweet N' Shameless. In the comments
section, feel free to leave your suggestions for
which Bay poet you'd like to see cover whom. ( I
know who I'm covering, and you'll never see it
coming. )"
----LAST WEEK: Fun show! 100+ in zee house. Lots of
new people in the slam, TWENTY poets signed up!
Mostly regulars in the audience. Miguel Peraza ( of
team UC Berkeley ) brought the heat and won it,
deservedly so. Many folks turned out to see our
feature, Bucky, and he did not disappoint. Best set
I've ever seen him do, IMHO. The SF team turned out
in force, looking to sell raffle tickets and break
off a chunk of the prize money. Kenyatta did so,
finishing 2nd after winning a round of Sudden Death
Haiku against Dawn, alternate of Team Berkeley 05,
who finished 3rd.

( 5 ) SANTA CRUZ --Next Slam: WEDS, July 18.
Elatna Koon checks in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~~
Hello there -
----It's been awhile since we have talked. I know I
said I would call as soon as I got home from work,
but you understand? The baby needing feeding, the
carpets needed cleaning, the dog a walk, etc. Anyhow,
I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I
hope that you didn't lose much sleep thinking about
our next meeting...How does WEDNESDAY JULY 18TH,
sound? Say, 8pm? Now here is my real question,
where? As you know, we have been meeting at that
Educational Entertainment Eatery downtown. Appar-
ently some suits in the county office are marinating
a beef with the owner, and well I guess the future
is a question mark. In any event, this month would
be our ONE YEAR ANIVERSERY, and if you wanted to,
well I would love to take you out. But do you want
to go back to the place where we started it all, or
would you be interested in making our love public,
and taking this mother to the streets?
----Here's how I see it: We could have it at the E3,
like we always do, baby. We would have the $2 pints
of Sierra, the nightclub ambiance, beautiful music
by the lovely MLE Wax, Comfortable and cozy seats
and tables, a little amplified sound and a stage;
heck, maybe even some food, it is an eatery after
all. It would be the usual, $4 at the door, and the
whole wrist band ID song and dance, but you never
complain, and if you didn't have either I would
still let ya in.
or...
----We could grab a beach chair, a blanket, and
maybe a flask and head to Pacific Ave in front of
O'Neill's across from the Cinema 9. We could meet
there at say, 8? If you felt like reading something
maybe you show up at 7:30 and write your name down.
Now there would be no bar, and there would be no
mic, but sometimes you gotta get loud regardless of
the situation. We could have the whole 12 poet, 2-
round, cash prize scenario. I wouldn't even charge
ya anything, because I don't think you can do that
on a sidewalk. Sure donations might be accepted, but
since there is no door, I won't be covering it. We
could proclaim our love for one another in front of
all the townies and tourists, and shit maybe we will
all go see a movie afterwards.
----What do ya say? What do ya think? Please e-mail
me back with your response. We have 4 days until the
damn thing must be done, and I won't let our
anniversary be missed. SO PLEASE, EVERYONE WHO GETS
THIS EMAIL: Reply with your vote for what we should
do this Wednesday, July 18th.
----I will be awaiting your many replies, my sweet.
---Until we meet again, Love...sweet, sweet love,
Elliott Bonaparte Kuhnagelin

SAT & SUN, July 21-22.
Garland Thompson checks in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
---What's up, party people! Welcome to the 10th
Annual West Coast Championship Poetry Slam!
Happening July 21-22, 2007 from 12-6pm
both days at the Henry Miller Library in one of the
most heavenly spots on the face of this planet. I'm
talking about beautiful Big Sur, California!
---Imagine this: you're there in the audience
enjoying the beauty of Big Sur with your friends,
or loved ones, when suddenly the battle for your
hearts, and minds is laid out before your eyes in a
dreamy landscape ( "Alice and Wonderland" anyone? )
by teams of stunning Poets from all over the West.
They come for this noble purpose, to give you life
as seen by their senses. In addition to walking
away with one of four top titles, winning teams will
also split a purse totaling $2000! Your love, some
glory, and a bit of the green, are what these Poets
are going for!
---It's all happening on Highway 1, about 26 miles
south of Carmel & Monterey, the towns where Langston
Hughes wrote some of his most poignant work, and
John Steinbeck wrote his delicious novel, "Cannery
Row".
---The host is Poet, Playwright, Activist, and
Pacifica correspondent, Jerry Quickley. He returns
to us from the studios of KPFK 90.7 FM in LA, where
he hosts BENEATH THE SURFACE. He is a three-
time LA Grand Slam winner.
---I'm also thrilled to announce that our all-time
favorite Master of the wheels of steel, that
Turntablist supreme, DJ Jedi will be returning to
grace us with a musical, soundscape vibe only he
can bring to the mix!

( 8 ) OAK/ BrOakland -Next Slam: THURS, July 26.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~~
---Nationals is just weeks away! The Battle of The
Bay series is just about finished, the individual
poets on the teams have tweaked and tightened their
already phenomenal work and have also formed
together like Voltron to create new SUPER poems
called "team" or "group" or "multi-voice" poems.
---Have you heard of The Suicide Kings? Proletariat
Bronze? These are just two ( DOPE! ) performance
collectives that got their spark from creating this
type of work. Something special happens when poetic
people creatively combine their efforts. The funny
turns hilarious, touching becomes heart-wrenching,
the passionate becomes electrifying. All that to
say - this show is extra-special! The regular slam
will be replaced by a multi-voice competition
featuring the four local teams in various different
configurations and, because we can't not tweak the
format, special guests Proletariat Bronze. We don't
know who'll be on stage together but we do know
that no one'll be there alone! Well, not no one...
we're also thrilled to present a special Alumni
Showcase featuring members of Oakland's Slam Team
going all the way back to '99!
---We'll still have a short open-mic as always so
YOU can bless the mic if you like. We'll have DJ
Agana on the 1s & 2s spinning the the funky hip-hop
and salsa grooves during and after the show and
since this is the last time we'll all be together
before taking off for Nat's we'll be hanging around

( 10 )NATIONAL POETRY SLAM --Aug 7-11.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
---The is the Big Momma of poetry slams, where 75
teams of poets from all over the world perform
their hearts out, party their guts out, and shag
their brains out. But seriously, it's not ALL
nekkid pool jumps and late-night erotic readings.
There are also many meetings, politickings, talent-
scoutings, late-night ciphers, and open mic-ings
as well. The years I've gone and NOT been on a
team were the most fun, when I could wander
between venues, cheer for the teams I wanted to
cheer for, and see poets from around the world
making all kinds of mischief, metaphorical and
otherwise. Please consider planning a trip, and
support your home team!
