Theater piece by Bamuthi ( aka Seeking )( Details:18b ),
plus a shit-talking birthday party for Jamie
DeWolf ( Details:[ 18a ] ), the WordShop ( Details:[ 3 ] ),
touring poets, great stuff! Really folks, these
are some of the most exciting developments I've
seen in the NorCal scene in years. More good news:
Khiry Malik is reviving the Sacramento Slam Team!
Stay Tuned!

----SOUL FEST is gonna be HUGE! Check out some
of this talent: Mayda Del Valle, GeorgiaMe, Queen
Sheba, Queen GodIs, Medusa, Shihan, Ursula Rucker,
Ainsley Burrows, Mahogany Browne, Tshaka, Black
Ice, Taalam Acey; and those are just some the
Visiting artists I recognize! There are so many
more, both local and from across North America!
Details: ( 5 ).

----SF SLAM IS BACK! Our first show of the new
season will be on Sunday, Nov 11th. We have a new
venue, a freaking cool ass upstairs theater space
three blocks from a BART station. The space is all
ages! Those of you out there who can't enjoy poetry
without a kick, know that it is next to a bar as
well as a couple restaurants! Details: ( 9 ).

----WORDSHOP is back! It's a weekly workshop for
poets, friendly to performance, curated by
Christian Drake. Oh yeah, BEER AND PIZZA! It's
every Wednesday, before the slam, starting at
6:30. Details: ( 3 ).

Sheridan is out from Minneapolis. Details:( 2 ).

( 2 )BERZERKELEY POETRY SLAM -Every Wednesday.
*2007 West Coast Champions * Best of the E.Bay*
Charles Ekabhumi checks in:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~~~~
----THIS WEEK: Dead Poets' Slam! $150 In Cash
Prizes! Live Jazz, Hot Pizza, and Irish Beer!
Ekabhumi hosts the slam.
----THE DEAD POETS' SLAM is a legendary annual
event. This year, it's on Halloween itself!!! Read
a poem by your favorite deceased bard! Bring TWO
poems, in case you make the second round ...and
dress up! $25 for Best Costume! We're gonna have
TONS of candy, beer ( of course! ), and goulish
poetry. PLUS a live beat-boxing performance of
"Thriller" by Joshua Walters and Eachbox!
----FEATURING: Minneapolis' Thadra Sheridan is a
multiple Grand Slam Champ in Minneapolis, as well
as a former member of the SF Team ( 05 ), and coach
of the Berkeley Team ( 06 ). Her deadpan delivery
of wickedly funny lines has made her fans from
both regulars and the most bitter of poetry haters.
She's a bartender by trade, and has collected
volumes of stories about the urban underbelly. She
has performed her poetry all over the U.S., and has
won awards for her writing from the Faulkner
Society and from the National Legague of American
Pen Women, and her work has been published in
several anthologies.
----LAST WEEK: Lucky 7 held it down as our emcee
whilst 100+ joined us for a night of solid slam!
---In the Open Slam, we had 24 poets signed up!!!
Once again, time penalties played a major role in
Determinine who took home the cash, with a the
newbies and veterans battling it out for supremacy.
Much respect to audience favorites John F, and
Selene Steese, who missed making Round 2 by only
ONE TENTH of a point! Laura Yes Yes, Cynthia Sims,
Robert Vincent, and Kerel also made an impression
but came up short on scores.
---Our feature, Denver's Paulie Lipman, brought his
punk rock ethos to the mic, loudly proclaiming his
love of weird women and all things counter-culture.
If you like your poetry served with equal parts
love, laughter, and lunacy, he's your chef.
---Round 2, Ekabhumi sacrificed, D'Andre gave us
some 'Food For Thought', and Mark States'
"Quickways" went overtime and took him out of the
money. Christian's "Werewolf" bit off $20 for 3rd,
Team Palo Alto's Melissa Rose ( a rare appearance! )
earned 2nd with two quiet, but emotionally raw
pieces, and winning it all for the first time, with
the high score in BOTH rounds: Baraka!
----UPCOMING: Nov 7: Open Slam featuring Jason
Bayani, hosted by Joshua Walters & D.Silence; Nov
14: Featuring '05 National Indi Champ Sonya Renee;
Nov 21: featuring '07 National Indi Champ, Seattle's
Danny Sherard! Nov 28: SOCK PUPPET SLAM, featuring
'03 Indi Champ Mighty Mike McGee!

because we supply a large pizza. There's usually a
pitcher of the Starry Plough's finest, as well. It
is completely free, a service to the community,
supplied by the slam. Hang out, discuss poetry,
eat, drink, and stay for the show!

fistful of frenzied fun with one of my favorite
performers on the planet: the one and only trash
talking pastry JELLY DONUT! Ever since the ballsy
ball of dough erupted onto the Tourettes stage
( watch his deranged debut here:
youtube.com/v/VYMb_LPN1dI ) he's pranced
and pranked his way to national prominence from
appearances on MTV's TRL to his beef with Lady
Sovereign that lead to him getting SPIT ON! youtube.com/
watch?v=orvoSJJQowc. What pranks
will he pull this time? What costume will wear when
he faces down the gold teethed grills of Oakland's
hungriest battle emcees?
----We'll also bring you the surreal stand up of
MARY VAN NOTE! Her strange delivery and evil geek
chic have made her a rising star in the Bay under
ground comedy scene, here's a taste:

also be showing the world the first taste of the
Cannabis Club Crime Caper SMOKED, starring the
Suicide Kings and Jaylee Alde, a special appearance
by THADRA SHERIDAN, the premiere of a dark short
film by DeWolf: SAFE, and Jelly D will be serving
up some cinematic controversey himself! There'll
be a menage a trois dirty haiku bout between
ELEANOR vs. TERA vs. Defending vulgar veined JUSTIN
SCALES and beatboxers from the Vowel Movement!
Dirty films, dirty minds, a rip roaring ride of
ruckus! To hell with your halloween hangover, this

seamlessly integrated... biting, clever wordplay...
this 75-minute, perfectly paced work of dance
theater is sharpened by its heartfelt integrity."
- The Boston Globe
----The Living Word Project repertory piece,
Scourge, completes an international tour with a
return to the Bay Area, where it originally
premiered as a commission by Youth Speaks and
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in 2005. It has
since earned critical acclaim across the U.S. and
Europe and earned its lead artist a Creative
Capital award and an inaugural United States Artist
Rockefeller Fellowship. In addition, Bamuthi has
just been named one of America's Top Young
Innovators in the Arts and Sciences by SMITHSONIAN
MAGAZINE ( see link below ). Marc Bamuthi Joseph and
his cast of musicians, poets, and dancers present
a powerful look at Haiti in its 200th year as a
sovereign nation on two consecutive weekends at
San Francisco's ODC Theater.
----*Attendees of the Scourge benefit on October
27th are invited to a complimentary reception prior
to the show and to continue celebrating afterwards
as VIPs with Clyde Stubblefield and DJ Kool Herc.
