Art in the News Long Island rock band Brand New plays House of Blues this week
Posted by mamta on Sunday, November 15, 2009 (08:26:31)

“Daisy’’ is such a contrast to Brand New’s earlier work that it’s almost hard to believe it’s the same band. The caustic, dirty throwback to mid-’90s guitar indie and punk screaming is a pretty mess. It’s a credit to the band’s reputation that it can release a neo-grunge record and have it seem like a big step forward in contemporary punk....

Art in the News Kailash Kher's music draws on 2,000 years of mysticism
Posted by mamta on Sunday, November 08, 2009 (11:35:49)

That tale is an urban myth. And Kher, now one of India’s best-loved stars for his exhilarating, Sufi-inspired music, debunks it regularly. But the hardscrabble image of an aspiring singer arriving from the hinterland with no pedigree in the glitzy Bollywood biz is accurate in spirit, if not in detail....

Art in the News Marquee: Ghostface Killah
Posted by mamta on Friday, November 06, 2009 (06:44:41)

In Ghostface Killah's eyes, a "mature" album means a joint stocked with R&B-infused ladies' jams. So in conjunction with his admission that he's long outgrown the gruesome street life he so skillfully chronicles, we get Ghostdini: The Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City. ...

Art in the News Gig review: The Songbook of Unsingable Songs
Posted by mamta on Wednesday, November 04, 2009 (05:44:13)

A COLLABORATION between composer Stephen Deazley and poet Matt Harvey, The Songbook of Unsingable Songs brims with lively wit. In his introduction, Deazley said as much – the singers were having fun, he was having fun, and we the audience were going to have lots of fun. Seconds into the first song it was clear he meant every word. ...

Art in the News A plunge into moonlight madness
Posted by mamta on Thursday, October 29, 2009 (05:12:47)

"Rite" is an exercise in barbarism for a huge orchestra. "Pierrot" is a hallucination for five players and a singer-speaker. "Rite," once considered unplayable, is regularly performed as an orchestral showpiece. "Pierrot" is seldom done, at least hereabouts. Memory recalls only two Berkshire performances before last Saturday night: one about 25 years ago at Williams College, the other about 20 years ago at Tanglewood....
