News in Poetry Poetry slam furthers change in Ogden community

Four of the state’s top young poets competed in a Champions’ Slam last week to raise funds for the first homeless youth shelter in Utah. The Champions’ Slam, in which all competitors must have won at least one poetry slam before or have had their works published, was organized by Weber State students, Westminster’s Slam Poetry Club and the non-profit group Wasatch Wordsmiths.Link!

The Winnipeg Poetry Slam is opening its 2014-2015 season with the Winnipeg Individual Poetry Slam Championships aka The Indies on Thursday, Dec. 4. At 9 p.m. Friday, the lights in Ern Commons dimmed and the loud chatter became a hush as the culminating event of Black Culture Week was set to begin. The poetry slam, “A Tribute To Our Stars,” showcased the talent and passion poets from B.E.A.T.S., or the Black Expression Awareness and Thought Society, and Nauhtal, an award winning slam team from Virginia Commonwealth University.Link!

Originating out of the Green Mill, a Chicago jazz club, slam poetry adds a soulful and passionate twist to this classic form of literature. In 1986, Marc Smith organized the Uptown Poetry Slam, the first cabaret-style poetry competition of its kind, earning himself the moniker "Slam Papi."

Poetry News: A performance by nationally known slam poets Ken Arkind and Marty McConnell will be presented at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 in Room C005 at the College of Lake County Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Ken Arkind, a National Poetry Slam Champion and full-time touring artist, is half of The Dynamic Duo, the nation's most highly booked spoken word act for the past two years. He has been featured in documentaries, was a member of the highly influential Spilljoy Ensemble tour and is the founding program director of Denver Minor Disturbance, an independent literary arts organization for Colorado youth.

News in Poetry Myrlin Hepworth to rep Phoenix in iWPS

On Saturday, Phoenix' {9} the Gallery hosted the finals for this year's iWPS Phoenix championship to choose the poet who will represent the city at the Individual World Poetry Slams, to be held in Phoenix this coming October. At the end of a hard-fought slam, Myrlin Hepworth emerged victorious. The story on the Saturday slam, published in ASU's student newspaper, includes videos of two other performances. .

In the Traditional Media iWPS kicks off competition for Phoenix rep to October Event

Phoenix has started gearing up as hosts of October's Individual World Poetry Slam, the elite international competition for poetry slammers around the world. A month ahead of the event, Phoenix poets are going head to head to choose the city's representative in the upcoming event. ASU's The State Press lists the winners of Thursday's first round and names dates and places for the finals.
