The poem can be based on the following themes: Solitude, Pineapple, or some mixture of both.
The winning haiku will be chosen by A.B. Vidal, Chief Exectuve of St. Elsewhere (a.k.a. Emerson Dameron, a college friend of Danger Mouse).

Modern Haiku Poetry - What It is and How to Write It

The venerable haiku poem has been around for hundreds of years. Traditionally composed in Japan using a 5-7-5 arrangement of syllables, western poets have loosened this form to create what is now considered modern haiku poetry.
The modern version still sounds somewhat similar to the original but it does not adhere to making the syllables come out to 5-7-5. This is a good thing! It frees the poet up to explore what is truly important in haiku writing and that is its spirit!

So, you want to learn haiku. It's no surprise. Many people are attracted to this elegant and economical poetry form. In just a few words, an entire scene is captured.
To learn haiku, you need to forget about what you've heard regarding writing it. The notorious 5-7-5-syllable rule no longer applies to modern haiku poetry. This is a good thing for it frees you up to focus on expressing yourself without worrying if your syllables fit a predefined pattern.

THIS SUNDAY: The Haiku Showdown! A farcical competition that puts the classic Japanese poem through strange and unusual punishment. Poets compete head-to-head and are judged by three flag-wielding audience members. Competition is open to all and we encourage a range of haiku (5-7-5 syllabic structure) dealing with subjects from the ridiculous to the sublime. Sushi for the champion!
