The Gods of War Drink Guinness

by sakhara291

There's no bar like a biker bar
the smell of leather and the sound of the jukebox
the underlying tension of words becoming actions
and the smoke permeates
like adrenaline and self assurance

they were six badasses sharing a pitcher
one waved me over
and they poured me a pint
the gods of war drink guinness
and regale their glory days
they have no respect for wimpy ales
or weaker lagers

they raised their glasses in a toast
'to my enemies' said the first
'may they always be abundant'
and I was happy to agree
the second lit a cigarette
and the smoke swirled
like arrogance and exagerration

the third said he missed the old days
that war was not war
when it was not face to face
I begged to differ
that a victory was still a victory
no matter the means or motivation
and the fourth said he'd drink to that

the fifth asked what I was fighting
or if I carried a sword for show
I told him my enemies and allies
all wore the same guise
and that our fighting was no longer physical
'It's a sad day,' spoke the first
'when a warrior picks up the mantle of a pilgrim
Clarly there's no hope for any of us.'
'Hardly,' I responded
the smoke hung
like confusion and dissatisfaction
'a battle is a battle no matter where it takes place
and an opponent you cannot strike is harder to vanquish.'

'Exactly,' cried the sixth, 'too often lately
I feel as though I've been carrying the wrong weaponry
and there's nothing in my arsenal
I can use to win these battles;
'But how does one defeat a foe one cannot see?' asked the third
'More importantly,' I replied, 'how does one
defeat oneself? At what point does one cease
being the champion and become the villian?'
'Impossible,' the second scoffed
'the difference between glory and honor,' I responded
'is in the audience. Right is still right
when no one is watching.'
'But you haven't answered the question,' the fourth noticed
the smoke swirled
like deceit and uselessness

'Maybe there isn't one,' I chose my words carefully
'maybe there are enemies all around you,
and you can no longer recognize them.'

the gods of war drink guinness
and regale their glory days
they have no respect for wimpy ales
or weaker lagers
and I saluted them as I stepped outside
the smoke followed me
like loss and despair
they wanted a war
and I wanted to give them one
but the difference between honor and glory
is that right is still right
when no one is watching
and a quest is still a quest
no matter weapons or outcome
