The ghost of old number five

The ghost of old number five

They hear the rumble of old number five
at twelve each Wednesday night,
and hear her pistons driving hard
as they pushed her into sight.

Through the fog came number five
then past the mercantile store,
above her noise the engineer screams
“get along you crusty old whore”.

With head to the wind, gages red
gathering speed and blowin’ steam;
gulping coal like hells infernal,
‘twould be the last of the iron colleen.

Down the hill toward the curve
she’s on the road to hell.
Clanging bell, the whistle blows
dead silence thereafter fell.

We gather at that fatale curve
where Number Five met her death
and each Wednesday wind-swept night,
history holds it’s breath.

Very powerful write, Mozark... the age of steam when locomotives had names, personalities and ruled the rails. So very well done, you really pulled me in. Thank you, Mary Ann
