Flying Over Boston

by chameleon

what grownups abandoned became ours by default - a pen, a soda bottle, a bedraggled cat -

our club was the crumbling building on Moreland Street reclaimed the same way we appropriated lost pennies and the couch from the itch field with all its insides barely held by cat-torn brocade.

it was, of course, forbidden. The ceiling falling, the floor uncertain, the banisters and railings wobbly and full of gaps promised five story falls to the cracked tile lobby floor but our featherweight touches disturbed so little, we barely left footprints in the hallway dust.

we dared ourselves to fly, jumping across the fire-escaped gaps from one precarious balcony to the next, five stories above the backyard junk, the rusted mattress springs piled high for just in case but really, we didn't believe we'd ever need rescue

any more than the girl in the ten-years-later front page photo pirouetting mid-air above the somersaulting fire-escape, her arms raised in supplication to catch the infant inches above her grasping fingers.

10 years later, life is no longer a science experiment, under control, the abandoned building is replaced by a home on fire with the same girl facing a real life challenge, hoping to save the child within, without a mattress to catch her fall, without the wiggle room for failure a child may possess, I think I am interpreting the way this poem was intended, I like it! b.
