flags

by omegapaf

flags of red, and white usually don't want to fight
the mostly green, and red flags seem dominant today
though the black, red, and gold will still have their say

i prefer the red, and black stripe down trinidad, and tobago way
to the red, white, and blue butchers apron from back in the day
when a union jack flew in every battle attack
the stars, and blue of the southern cross
mourn europeon anzac loss

mindlessly saluting bits of cloth
a good way to get young men to unleash napalm wrath
think i'll wave the black flag
after all, it's just a worthless rag

the red, gold, and green of a rasta man
and black, and red of an anarchy fan
all colours are used to stir up love, and hate
and stifle logical debate

flags seem to get bigger in times of national bust, and boom
but what flags are really best at, is lying on the unknown soldiers tomb.

G'day Paul...
And that's about it Paul...over here we have the boxing kangaroo dominant at sporting events, the eureka flag for the protesting worker and a national flag either half mast or draped on a casket off a soldier coming home.
Yes, flags are flown to unite for both good and bad reasons.

Your poem truly makes the reader stop and think of all the flags they see, hardly noticed until they're dipped in courtesy to a departed official or bound around a casket. A symbol of nationalism used to fire up the populace to war... seems an archaic practice in 2009. Surely an extremely poignant write, Paul. Peace, Mary Ann

The flag represents the people- the people represent the flag- this very simple concept represents it greatest snag. The flag is a great divider- of people and ideas, and more often than not it represents fear. Fear of the patriots knocking on your door- fear their ideology and dying in their wars.... lyrics by an american band called resist- the song? 'Burn the flag'. Your poem reminded me of these sentiments. I like trinidad and tobago's flag too. When england played them in the last world cup I put on an event for kids where the community centre had lots of carribean food to sample and there was a big screen outside for the match. I don't think benwell's been the same since! Nice to see more of your work on here. Been a while mate! Take care, spence

I am intrigued by this piece. I couldn't help but also think of pirate flags, where red meant that they were going to kill everyone on board. Can you imagine seeing that one coming at you? My father taught me that one should never hold more stock in the flag than you do what it represents. I think of that when I see a person waving one in their hands. I think about what it symbolizes to them... Audie.

Flags? I own none. The colors of Trinidad and Tobago represent, to me, the Orisha, Ellegua, who is the Central representative to 'God on high" in their traditional religion for the last, say, 500 years...It was so interesting that the First family wore these colors in all of their famous photos in the inaguaration speech in Lincoln Park ...makes one think, since his father, from Kenya, may have a similiar, but not identical, religion, just a few thoughts....
