ashes

by omegapaf

a juicy full toss dispatched to the boundary
with one over left before tea
millions of aussies staying up all night
like we do in england when australia hosts the ashes fight

players sitting on a pair of ducks
makes me throw beer cans at the t.v. and shout " you useless f**ks "
drunken fancy dress pirates in the crowd add to the atmosphere
a slower ball hit for six in to the second tier

a bouncer at the head
keeps a batsman on his toes
but despite all that is said
england and australia are always friendly foes

explaining the rules, and traditions of cricket to unbelievers is a very sticky wicket
we need freddie, and spinner ponting removal, in the showdown at the oval.

Did you mean 'Pointing" In the next to last line? Or is this one of those mysterious cricket words? I understand none of this, but rated it on form and all of those other poetic things that you say that you don't care about, yet come naturally to you...

ponting is a man. an australian man. who scores zillions of runs. but is vunerable to spin when he first gets in. sorry to baffle you with this one gail. they say cricket crowds are full of old men because it takes fifty years to learn all the rules ha ha - diving for a dolly catch off a bat pad with the new cherry - paul.

Tee-hee, Paul...cricket, even wonderful exacting explanations might go over my head, LOL! Neat poem with lots of flavor and ooo-ra-ra built in, fun to read and imagine all the excitement of the crowds of onlookers. Neat showdown my friend, Mary Ann

i really thought the last people in the world this poem would appeal to would be american women ha ha. the showdown is the end of next week. 5 days of test cricket...winner take all. i'd explain the rules...but i don't think i'd live long enough to finish ha ha - fishing outside off stump - paul.

G'day Paul...
A lot of fallacy in this poem Paul...few Aussies stayed up after midnight here on the third day of the last test. There was only the test patten on the telly. Australians are friendly if England are 9/55 in the second innings, needing another three hundred with one day to play, and yes, when it rains in England, we cry down under...except when the boys are in dire straits of course, but that's not too often. I'll look out for you at the Oval Paul.

just wanted to add a yaaaayyyy!! to the end of this poem after the ashes result. to my australian friends...no i don't know how we won either. i've never seen an oval pitch like that. the spinner made all the difference, along with bizarre run outs. - a late cut off the flipper past third man - paul.

Who's on first ? Yes he is...just kidding an old Abbot and Costello routine for baseball. I think it's the only sport where you can camp out like a rock festival and they play on and on and on. I tell you though if my baseball teams had guys who could pitch as hard and as fast as the bowlers in that game they would be going to the World Series easily. Nice write. The terms and the humor in this are great. Overall, even for one such as myself who does not understand the game it is still fun to watch now and then.

who's on first, what's on second, idontknows on third? thanks john. i've always enjoyed baseball too. but i think the beauty of cricket is that it is so very complicated, but looks so very simple when it is played well. i know what you mean about the rock festival atmosphere. i can't think of any other sports match that goes on for seven hours a day, for five days. - a dance down the wicket for a lofted cover drive - paul.
