Mirror Image

To me you were always
the most beautiful one,
despite your sadness,
or maybe in spite of.

You always did love to suffer.

And now I know exactly
what it is you see
when you crucify yourself
through me.

(You know I've seen
from behind your eyes
for 25 years.)

But now as I stand
a mere image of you
-although less weathered-
for the briefest of views,
your beauty is shattered.

I'll never be what you wanted to be.

And although I am not
a mother, nor a wife,
in my opinion
(the one that counts)
I am living a good life.
