The Crossing

longing aches into my soul

it scrapes the broken face
of this old heart that won't
believe it cannot reach
across a giant ocean sea
to kiss your eyes once more
before the rising sun can brush
dawn warmth into the fineness
of your delicious skin
or before a wandering
pair of love's lips
can whisper secrets
through the hair
that lies so softly on
your tender cheek

but this worn heart of mine
can't buffalo me

it dare not say it is okay to be
so very far away from she who
somehow still manages to
breathe from way over there
the only real life I've ever known
into me clear over here
each hungry day
