Birthright

She found space in a dark corner,
mewing near her time.
Soon they came, slippery seeds,
all sightless in afterbirth.

She licked them clean. Raspy
tongue oiled by purple placenta,
meal for her milk. They banged
at her teats, nuzzled intently.

The farm had more than enough.
Within the hour, he took all
but one. Two pails waited
in the yard for water and cats.

She never cried, mother love
beaming on her blind baby.
