Taholah

by maryanns

Taholah stands as she always has
with one sandy foot on the seashore
and the other firmly placed in the path
of the blue Quinault River.

Rocky outcrops belie human ties
to lonely outposts that dot the beach
isolated by windy miles of wilderness
along the cold Pacific coast.

Home is where the footprints end
from house to house to borrow eggs
where children roam on potholed lanes
riding homemade skateboards.

Sockeye swim and return in season
idle skiffs with blue fishing nets drift
to life along the shore in tribal traditions
breaking out in excitement.

Outboard motors race roaring surf
blue smoke rolls where paddles rowed
through crashing waves in pursuit of fish
running crests in cedar boats.

Fish line fences as they always have
drying in salt air sunbeams of promise
outsiders line the beaches to photograph
rare examples of prior times.

Taholah stands as she always has
with one calloused foot in the present
and her other firmly planted in the past
where ancient ways play out.

Thank you, Rory... I should have noted Taholah is about 26 miles up the coast from where I live. A Quinault village, store, school... that's about it except for such a lovely, peaceful setting where the river runs into the sea. Best wishes, Mary Ann
