Twenty Two Days

by maryanns

Twenty two days of November shall pass
till the hardy and lucky and wealthy express
expected regards for all they possess
on a day full of thankfulness.

For the roof overhead, for money to spend;
clothes on their backs, for family and friends
sharing a turkey and giblets and yams
on a day full of thankfulness.

For football games and a quarterback pass
for a tight-end’s catch and a ninety yard dash
as thousands of lungs exhale all at once
on a day full of thankfulness.

For heroes and villains in jerseys and sweats
that end at the knee and get covered with grass
one could believe the world is at peace
on a day full of thankfulness.

Pray for the people who have nothing to eat
pray for small children who live on the streets
pray for the casualties that we never see
on a day full of thankfulness.

Please, do not forget to pray for our troops
who couldn’t come home to be with their kids
reflect on the thousands serving at risk
on a day full of thankfulness.

For RJ and his companions in Taji, Iraq…
least they think we might forget them.

Wow, I dont know what to say mary ann, this is one of those poems that brings out the warcries in my heart. It is good people like you that make this all worth while. Knowing that the pain we feel over here doesnt go un-noticed by everyone really means the difference between giving up and driving on to a lot of people. People can say all day long how badly they want the troops to come home, and how rediculous this "war" or "police action" isover here. But once they say it, the thought leaves and there minds go right back to their lives back home. Its not their fault, its human nature. So very few people truly understand the full extent of what we do over here and what we have to live with. And they shouldnt have to because that is what seperates soldiers from civilians. I enlisted to do this to myself and my family by my own mind and right hand. So when I hear stories of exitement about the holidays it makes me happy. Happy tears fall from my face knowing that good people are sitting at home with their families feeling safe and loved, not having to worry about this mess over here that is our lives. I thank you for your dedication as well as your understanding and kind words you have written here. I will never forget this. My brothers here will never forget this either. You are an outstanding writer with a level head and for that I applaud you. You are a good friend and for that I am thankful.
Thank you
RJ
