Island-Hearted

In my heart is a freckle-faced girl
Who still sits in the sand,
Casting her dreams out into the ocean waves.

Everyday
I am afraid I'll lose her.
That she'll fade,
Scraped away by the grit of city living
That she'll mutate with time and tragedy
Trading dreams for regrets
That only sink and lie hopelessly on the ocean floor

Sometimes I whisper to her softly
In a voice she'll only recognize as wind
I beg her to keep gazing beyond the horizon
To trust the ever powerful ocean
and to always listen carefully to the wind
