Poems - Veil of sanity

Veil of sanity

The point in his life that he knew would inevitably come,
was playing out before his eyes.
not as elegant as he'd envisioned of course
His feet barely touched the aged ceramic tiles as his weight stretched
the cheap plastic rope around his neck.
They’ll be here soon!

Slowly starved of oxygen,
he was now viewing his life, and the small bed-sit through kaleidoscope-fish-eyes.
Just like the time he dropped acid in the Himalayas’
A contorted ballet dancer en-point, awaiting the encore…………..

Everything was in its place; receipts, certificates and merit badges on display,
the refrigerator full of deli-cuisine, the new Formica furniture polished and preened.
This veil of sanity had become intrinsic to his very survival, as had his stories to his self-importance.

The veil was wearing thin.
Denial was no longer his friend, and truth was a bitter enemy.

A knock on the door..........
