It is selfish to cry
at funerals,
and indulgent to discuss
the machinations of making coffee;

it is haughty to think
we can solve the mind-body problem
when Aristotle and Descartes failed,
and obligatory to try
anyway;

it is mandatory to mention
torque and horsepower,
and futile to bring up
politics;

it is pretentious to mention
Tennyson’s flower,
and foolish to begin mourning
too soon.
