Poems - The Sparrow
| | The Sparrowby maryanns
She waits by the roadside
but the sparrow never comes
her containers of carnations
bask in the noonday sun
Fresh pink and rosy peonies
placed in vases red and white
displayed aside the roadside
start to wither in the light
While carts and wagons jingle
past her dusty wayside wait
where flies her joyful sparrow
on his way to meet his mate
Did he forgot about his promise
in the blush of summertime
turning tan beside the wayside
wearing thin on berry wine
Why would he stop and flirt
each day for weeks and weeks
and regale her with the sights
he’d show her in the streets
From Cumberland to Boston
on a pleasant summer’s breeze
oh how could he miss this one…
she asks of the bumble bees.

maryanns this is a beautifully rhymed poem centering on nature and a broken promise. A truly wonderful read.

in the blush of summertime
turning tan beside the wayside
wearing thin on berry wine
I love this strophe immensely.
Great poetry.

Hmm. you've got me puzzled, Maryann - is she the previous sparrow mate or flowergirl?
"where flies her joyful sparrow
on his way to meet his mate"
Obviously the mate is sweeter than her displays of flowers!
Anyways, a cute and delightful poem! It seems to reflect your mood - my guess is that it was light and playful when you wrote this?

Beautiful use of alliteration and rhyme! One suggestion:
Has he forget about a promise
- I don't know if there is a typo there.
I would have expected:
Did he forget about a promise
or
Has he forgot about a promise
Just a suggestion - wonderful poem!
