Bathsheba ( Chagall ) by Ian M. Emberson

by Pirouette

This is not love
- but guilt ;
a King
( once a King
- still - in the nation's eyes )
but never again for her
- no - never again.
As he rests his head
in her lap
he is a child
who cries through the long blue shadows ;
his pride in beginnings,
his journeys through love and lust
have led to this
- this beating down in darkness.
Now are the city gates all shut,
the candles guttered,
and the one ewe lamb
the one ewe lamb
has been slain.
