Systematic Chaos

by Aparna

She sits on a lonely chair.
Withered, dry skin hanging loose.
A thin layer of gossamer wrapped
Around her once rotund frame.
Teeth clatter, fingers shiver,
She clutches onto her vanishing self,
As if she could warm herself!
I see her disappearing, dying of
Destitution, as I make way through life.
I see her look, through eyes of despair,
Calling out silent screams of desperation.
Words scarcely uttered, as if she
Has reserve amounts of voice left.
And her children? They seem to
Scour every inch of her,
Eating her away, a morsel at a time.
The mad procession. a crazy rush,
To her bones, when at last all but her
Skeleton remains.
As she transforms into a heap
Of calcium, so do her parasitic progeny.
Individually collapsing, last gulps of air,
Gasping and reducing into bits
Like their mother.
But for Mother Earth-
She will make a return-
Like a Phoenix born from its very destruction.
She will rise again, without her children,
Who bit and ate her into their finality.

Woh! Woh! Woh! I read this piece earlier, and after looking up the word 'destitution,' I figured out a bunch of things. People starving, unwilling to eat, lack of love are collapsing with children eating, but then...not eating which is when the parasitic feeling crosses---but for the love of earth, they will rise. Though the children bit into their 'skins,' something tells me they will rise, too. Good piece, liked it a lot. Maybe, they won't rise, because she, without the 'comfort' or 'similarity' of those children, who actually were like parasitic progeny---as you said.........there's a dark, deep, kindred spirit within these words....I'll stop rambling.

Strong and powerful stuff. The title is odd, but having read the poem I see where it comes from.

What a twist of events... Loving mother in fact killing herself by feeding her children, when she becomes to sick the children pass away and loving mother heals herself to give birth to more children.

Will she ever give birth to non- parasitic children when mother is the only meal?

In hopes for peace... BWP... James... Be well my friend...

I was initially very intrigued by your oxymoron of a title. And I like how you seem to summarize a greater life view in this short poem.
