Poems - The Mother and the Wall
| | The Mother and the Wallby Ramonez
A silence never heard before,
an emptiness never experienced;
these abstractions face her like a stone wall in winter,
only colder.
The realization that she has to climb it fills her lungs;
she gasps for air,
a swimmer lost at sea,
for the aroma of the Forest of Hope,
purer than spring blossoms and moist soil,
is pungent.
Getting over it makes her sick,
burns her throat,
a traveler stumbling through the desert,
drinking sand.
They had been all she’d ever lived for;
the thought of living without them causes her to retch,
a trapped animal foaming at the mouth,
chewing away at mangled metal, bone and gristle,
teeth chipped, tongue severed,
the summer sun fading in its eyes.
A sympathetic tap on the shoulder,
an uncertain hug,
hands whispering silky condolences over her black dress,
fingers sinking into her shoulder blades
like splinters of the wooden hammer handle
she intends to use to break down the wall,
stone by goddamned stone.

This is an excellent piece of poetry, my friend. In my opinion, this work resonates with the idea that we have to climb our obstacles--but not only that, climb over those 'abstractions' in order to gain our real selves. I found solace in this along with the anger. like splinters of the wooden hammer handle she intends to break the wall down, stone by goddamned stone. I felt like I was the character who was suffocating because my darkness came from the inexperience of darkness---she had to climb in order to hear silence and experience emptiness in order to find herself......................it scares people.
I'll stop rambling.

Your 'ramble' issn't a ramble at all-- it's a great comment, and love your take on this: "because my darkness came from the inexperience of darkness" Thank you.

what is the significance of the wall? the mother in mourning
is she to climb the wall of grief?

Spot on Alana. However, I guess what I was trying to say is that it's not so easy, especially if you've never been in a situation like this, or if people who haven't either tell you to 'get over it' (not in such a direct way, of course). Step by step, stone by stone, I think. But I have a shitty feeling that, as soon as the first 'wall' is broken down, another one will magically spring up. I don't think it's possible to ever get over the loss of a child/children. Ever.
Thank you for taking the time.

A fine, wrenching piece of endless perseverance - despite the odds, against her, she carries on. Beautiful, Mary Ann

Hey, Mary Ann. Thank you. So good to see your name. Your book is stunning. I'm going for thirds; too much to take in (in a good way).

Cheers, Iridium. Yes, I always tend to lean a bit towards the dark side myself. No idea why. Not that kind of person, really. Anyway, thank you for reading. Your comment is much appreciated.

Superb poem Ramon...reminded me of the deep meaning behind Nietzsche's "What doesn't kill one makes him stronger."
