Ode to Angel Oak

by WordLover

oh majestic oak
lowcountry’s own winged angel
we gasp in wonder

This haiku is written about the famous Angel Oak tree. Located on John's Island, South Carolina (in the lowcountry of coastal carolina). The tree is said to be approximately 1,500 years old. Please take a moment and google "angel oak" and take a look at this breathtaking sight. I have seen it in person and it truly is a wonder.

dear alana, it would be the perfect setting for Sleepy Hollow indeed! This area of the country John's Island, very near Charleston, is one of the most beautiful areas of the country I believe - and seeing this oak (God's Oak) some call it, is an amazing experience. Thanks so much for taking time to comment.

Sandy, this is a beautiful Haiku. It has made it all the more meaninful to me since I took your suggestion and googled the Oak. I absolutely LOVE the Lowcountry area of S.C.. We've stayed out on Hunting Island on cabin road a few times and while there we always explore up and down the coast line. However I didn't knew about this wondrous tree then, so I missed the opportunity. Your poem and the photos of this magnificent old live oak have made me swear to myself that I am going in the next few years. I want to thank you for your meaningful Haiku and your suggestion. I really felt an emotional connection with that tree! Smile Probably lived there in another life and my beaux proposed or did something of a romantic nature under it! Rolling Eyes Lovely!!! and thanks! In my favorites! Very Happy

Julie, your comments just made my night! Thanks so much. I live in Virginia Beach, but every summer for the past 5 years we have taken a vacation to a little place about 7 miles from Charleston, SC called Folly Beach, SC. Beautiful, small, a bit rustic - a perfect little "untouristy" beach town. John's Island is very close to Folly Beach and that's how we first discovered this amazing tree. You can see her, up close and personal, for a very nominal fee - they allow pictures, but you are not allowed to actually touch any of the branches because of the age, etc. Perhaps it's the many old, gorgeous mansions and overall southern quaintness of South Carolina that makes it so special, but whatever it is, I agree you can hear the history of that place whispering in the winds there. I'm a die-hard Virginian, but SC definitely holds a special place in my heart. It's so nice to hear that this beautiful tree evoked that same kind of feelings for you. Thanks SO much for sharing your thoughts. Sandy

Harry, it is really awe-inspiring when you see it in person, however, just google it and you can get an idea of it's massive size. A true wonder! Thanks, as always, Harry.

We have a tree of out own over 1,00 years old, but in a poor state. It's known as Robin hoods tree. They say he hid in it. Love this short but sweet poem. Thanks for posting. Take care. Love and best wishes. Pete. A 10 and a heart straight from mibne so there. Wink

Thank you so much for your kind comments. You are so right, just seeing it in pictures doesn't do it justice - you have to be there to really see it's incredible beauty. Thanks again.
