A Second Honeymoon

Cardinal wraps herself around
the branch in the bush
Her dashing mate soon to gain her
She flies ahead always
Her Siamese coat, all the rage among
the ladies, nestles her in for her wait
There're no leaves to hide her
Childless and free and gay she be
until the coming spring
Cold wind swishes in her eyes
But she holds fast wrapped
around the branch in the bush

Word-wise this is a beautiful little poem Kate - but I cannot help but think that I am missing out a bit on its meaning.
