FALL OF THE STONES

by dav.smith

He watched the five stones
spin and dance in their upwards race
five stones cast by tribal laws
the answer spoken in their final resting spots
As he watched, time slowed the stones
each having it's own reason for being
four having the power to judge
one having the balance of life and death
Brown, white, black and speckled
only the wise man knowing their full power
the stones special in their representation and meanings
unable to be touched by anyone, but the wise man
The fifth was the balance stone
Red, with one side smooth and polished~ life
the other side dry and rough~ death
this flat stone was crucial to the tribes laws
The young man stared as they landed
unable to read their meaning, he waits
the wise man draws a circle around the stones
beckoning all to leave him to read judgement
The wise man beckons the youth into the circle
pointing to the stones, he speaks
explaining each stones position, and relation to the others
finally coming to the balance stone
This stone, smooth side up
sits on the speckled stone, as if triumphant
explaining that this is a good omen
he sets free the youth and gathers up the stones

Ilan, what is lore and legend if it is not given to the next generation. We can learn so much from the true first peoples of each nation. cheers my friend dAVE

dave, you make such strong points with this piece - especially about the importance of traditions and how they must be passed down from generation to generation. The visuals in this fine piece are exceptional.

Well this is the first of your poems for me and I found a doozey. The story is so well told and thought out but you leave much mystery which is in all true spirituality. It was a great read. kb
