chess

by omegapaf

looking forward to a game of chess with an old friend
for many years we haven't played
but i still remember the double bishop raid
and where my vulnerable knight stayed
pawn wars are only pretend
it's queen and castle that matter in the end.

    got your tissue right here mary ann. of course it's not actually about chess, it's symbolic of the game of life.....the pawn's always get sacrificed so the queen and bishops can survive behind their castles - would you like a ride on my knights horse? - paul and hound queen.

Queen and castle could also be your woman and your home. Poem has many interpretations. Love it. You do not need to explain this one, silly!

    thanks andYe. occasionaly a pawn makes it through to the back line and becomes a queen, but very rarely. mostly they get sacrificed to the bishops, or die defending a castle - thanks again mate - paul.

Undoubtedly, this one is one of the best work i have seen in these days. I am a chess champion here and can feel the meaning of what has been said. On the other hand; the deep meaning of this poem can encompass our daily activities and phases of life in all spheres. Excellent great work. Max Score + added to FAV Very Happy Very Happy Auro

    a compliment from a chess champion, is a compliment indeed aurobindo. you obviously see the symbolism in chess. i'd like to see a poem from you on the same subject. welcome to gotpoetry. we need more indian writers on here. but look around and you'll find some - i'd like to play a game of chess with you someday....though you'd probably wipe me out in 20 minutes ha ha - paul.

    thanks moony. sometimes checkmate is declared, but an unobtrusive knight can block it. i didn't know there were so many chess fans on g.p. when i wrote it. as always i just wrote it for myself. i'm glad you enjoyed it - love and diagonal bishops danger - paul.

        a lot of black and white civilisations can survive and prosper without their kings and queens....but they all seem to need their bishops and castles - thanks moonie.

I love the many interpretations that I read in this really clever piece. And yes, sadly, it is always the pawns to be sacrificed so that the upper crust can live safely in style! Wonderful write.

    you got it sandy. it's the pawns that get sent all the way across the board to afganistan, while the kings and queens are safe behind their castles - love and peace or pieces - paul.

      Bindaas.. yes always pawns are sacrificed in the game and without all these pawns the so called powerful pieces are null n void. Our societal system is also the same. Rightly interpreted various deep meanings by all the commentators on this great piece of work. Thanks Paul. regards Auro

    i'm sure you do my friend. though we've never discussed it, i knew you and jahnvi would play chess. i'm sure you could beat me, as i tend to drink too much during a game and get up and wander round the board ( like it's gonna look better from a different angle?? ha ha ). though i'm pretty good at sacrificing my queen.....usually by accident ha ha - white horses - paul.

Paul... Chess is my game... My computer my opponent we are both stuck back in the woods; but she is one nasty opponent and a sharp trainer.

Every now and then good to sit down with an old friend and teach them some new tricks. Queen and Castles...

    thanks so much james. i think every child in the world should learn how to play chess. the mix of metaphor and practicality and patience is a good life lesson. i also heard that kids that play chess have better memories than those who don't. of course as you get older you realize the symbolism too.
    i used to play " battle chess " on the computer many moons ago. but i prefer playing face to face, if only to see if a little bead of sweat appears on my opponants brow, when i make a sweeping bishop move...or if it's a slight smile, i know i've f**ked up ha ha - back in the woods is a good place to be....easier to hide from the queen - paul.

    yes. there is a reason why certain things survive for hundreds, or thousands of years. because they have a universal value beyond their outward appearence. plato, shakespeare and certain paintings and poems spring to mind here - thanks little devil. i'm playing an old friend at chess tonight....i'm gonna try my new strategy.....resign before the game begins. that should throw him off his stride ha ha - paul.

Life/chess: chess/life...they tend to be interchangable. With me, it's three moves...checkmate. I think i'll stick to life!
