you are 100% correct re furroughed vs furrow. i used the former for a few reasons, to intensify the 'feel' of the depth of the gouge of the 'furrow' i spelled it similarly as to 'ploughed' vs plow....as well as linking it then to furlong, a unit of length used especially in horse racing....old english furlang, from furh 'furrow' + lang 'long'. the word originally denoted the length of a furrow in a common field (formally regarded as a square of ten acres). it was also used as the equivalent of the roman stadium, one eighth of a Roman mile, whence the current sense. just poetic licence play. heh
