Poems - Twelve lashes from old Rinzai's tongue
| | Twelve lashes from old Rinzai's tongueby badmalthus
there is no mind
there is no form
there is no emptiness
&
the self is a suffering
illusion
hidden behind
this thing called
enlightenment
but the old man’s staff
will still beat
the shit
from your sorry ass
so burn all the sutras
cease your meditation
&
stop choking
on your crazy koans
just open your
bodhisattva eyes
&
see the truth
beneath your feet

Great, powerful story to tell: nothing is worse than the magnification of those who fall beneath wisdom -- they never fully realize what there is to know, and never fully understand the concepts of transcendental enlightenment. I don't believe transcendental wisdom is the highest extension of a god; I think it is an understanding and grasping of the world outside our consciousness.
I will, however, have to read about bodhisattiva, because it is something I am not too familiar with. To be honest, my knowledge of "Rinzai" is very limited, but I will be doing more research to find out what it really is outside of the transcendental aspect.
I noticed the subtle, but noticeable changes on your page, Harry, by the way. I was wondering more about Zen; I was wondering if you would write a poem, and...tada!

But I get a feeling of darkness: the feeling it is a messed up realm of thought, about the whole koans.

Hi Sammi...Voila! Thank you for commenting on my poem...I was reading a book comparing Nietzsche's Ubermensch to Buddhism's Bodhisattava in my studies and suddenly realised why Fred went mad and the old Chinese and Japanese Zen masters were just hilariously crazy. I gave up my Zen practice ten years ago...stopped meditating...I suddenly found myself stuck in the realm of samsara and I didn't like it...I'm feeling good today.
I have never used koans as I was of the Soto school in those days...now I have taken to the Rinzai practice and the use of koans...I love it.
Many thanks Sammi.
Cheers...Harry

Personally, I don't see how a paradoxical riddle can bring people "transcendental enlightenment," to be honest. I had a feeling you disliked this whole theme, but I wanted to make sure.
If I became "transcendentally enlightened" by a paradox, I'd be hellishly satisfied with non-answers.

I disagree. That's just me, though.
I think a paradox is perception, and not a way to "gain attention."

Very deep, Zen Master!
Does this mean, if we think too much or have doubts, we obstruct our own vision? To swim smoothly in the river of life.
thought provoking...indeed!!

I think we use words to describe a reality that is beyond description...that's not a problem in itself...we write poetry...but if we build a border around it then everything becomes like a chunk of dogmatic concrete and love/hate...good/evil...become attachments and we find ourselves drowning in our own concepts.
Many many thanks Deepali.
