Remember Socrates

by tommyjacksprat

Their silent tears were shed inside
The room where he lay dead;
Though depth of grief was deep indeed
In silence death was fed.

The judges who consigned him to
Eternity of stones
Beseeched the gods of darker shame
To raise his sacred bones.

The court of Athens was revered
Yet they became the bane
Of high-born nobles to the poor;
His death filled all with pain.

Then Plato rinsed the poisoned cup
And kissed his teacher's lips;
The wisest man on earth had died
From suicidal sips.

The days of Socrates were gone,
Like vapors on the wind;
For his ambivilance to gods
The brightest star was dimmed.

Yet still today some bigots say
"believe my way or die".
If you believe one way is true
Then other ways must lie.

And Plato said no greater mind
Hath man than Socrates
But even him, so loved, had died
For doubting deities.

So when you hear those words you fear
That claim one way is true,
Remember Socrates and pray
They don't come after you!!

an appropriate piece for the times we live in with right wing radicals world wide pushing intolerance with their doctrines

Socrates was martyred for the freedom of thought we so highly revere..he is a hero in my eyes. I am more of an Aristotle fan myself, but even he would not have accomplished what he did without his mentor's mentor. In short..I think this is a great poem.
