Girl with Headphones by Ian M. Emberson

by Pirouette

She sits in the slumbered plush of a London train -
outside the spires spike up at a black-brushed sky,
straight streets are stitched on suburbia's counterpane,
and the carriage rush-hours with pilgrims to Peckham Rye.

But she hears only her tape-trapped harmonies -
what she sees is a blue-eyed dream no key can prise,
she only knows that the prayer-wheel turns on her knees,
and the sounds go up to her brain, and out at her eyes.

What is it then - sad Tristan's closing scene,
or does Bowie drive his songs on that double track -
what brings that lilt to each iris of ultramarine,
and pours warm opium over each pupil's black ?

I like this poem, it is very well written and put.
What drew me in to read this poem is the fact that I am currently wearing headphones. Once I started reading the poem reminded me of an old friend I lost who always had headphones on.

Great poem. Smile

Thanks for your comment from Red Mesa. I was inspired to write the poem when a girl got into the compartment, only stayed for a few minutes, listened to her headphones, and got out again. She'd be staggered to know that I'd written a poem about her !
    Best wishes,

Superb poem. I love the descriptiveness of it and the mix of the old world and new world imagery. When reading it, I couldn't help but question if this was a commentary on the fact that we miss out on a lot with the technology and such. The girl in the poem seems completely oblivious to what's going on around her and in many respects modern technology does make us oblivious to the wonder of our surroundings.

Anyways, great poem and I'm looking to read more shortly!

Thanks for your comments. I don't think I intended anything very profound - just a portrayal of the scene. But different people see different things in one's poems.
    Best wishes,
    Pirouette ( Ian M. Emberson )
