Voting by Ian M. Emberson

by Pirouette

It was strange really
that the swallows returned on polling day -
two of them
chasing each other
perhaps in play or combat
above the old school polling station.
I went in
voted as usual :
"Billie Haigh
married - one child
six years on council",
then, coming out,
I noticed a curious pattern in the sky -
two strands of cirrus
forming a cross.
Maybe, I thought,
one of the Gods has voted -
drawing his mark up there on heaven's blue.
But what has he voted for ? -
something to do with tax reform,
or a fall in the cost of postage ? -
or just that year by year
and age by age
swallows return.

Beautifully done, to take an average sort of event and draw in such delicate detail, very enjoyable artistry for your reader. In the end, a sense of resignation prevails... I can truly relate.

Thank you and best wishes, Mary Ann

Thanks for comments. The incident relates to my former home in
the small village of Thurstonland near Huddersfield. There really was a councillor named Billy Haigh, and I sent him a copy of the poem - which he carried around with him everywhere !
    Best wishes,
    Pirouette ( Ian )
