Found Dead In A Banana Box

by wolfinwindow

This happened many years ago
but it's forever etched in my mind.
Lila Ebright was her name,
found dead in a banana box
was her only claim to fame.
She went missing for weeks
from her own backyard.
She made national news,
police were baffled,
her mother worried sick.
She knew in her heart that
Lila was dead.
I could feel the emotion
oceans of tears that were cried,
as the searched and they tried.
I watched it in the media.
She was only five years old.

-what happened behind the scenes-

In Scott Schroat's bedroom,
drama played on.
They allowed her to play the big kid game,
Dungeons and Dragons.
He had her alone that day.
He placed her on his bed.
Scott Schroat took her by the throat
and strangled her three times and
stabbed her with a knife
before she finally died.

Poor Lila Ebright
It was part of the game
in a crazy boys mind
in a crazy neighborhood.
Scott let all the children
see the corpse
they laid their gaming hands
upon her...
the last little warps
before he put her in the box
and left her there to rot.
It was the August of the year
and very hot.'
The house started to stink,
so he threw her in a dumpster
like so much trash..
Luckily, that was his downfall
Lila was found soon after that.
Schroat was 17 and tried as an adult.
Scott Schroat got life imprisonment.
Lila Ebright became a memory.....

I remember hearing about this and wondering what kind of sick mind could do such a thing. She should be remembered and this is a beautiful way to make sure her story stays alive.

I always wonder what planet these people come from; they seem to eventually come to light almost everywhere. Something has gone terribly wrong... chills down my spine as I read your poem. Well done, my friend - Mary Ann

The schoat boy was actually her cousin which makes the story even more grim. Franks for dropping by. Hugs

I read that many psychologists and cognitive scientists are coming up with regular estimations that about 1% of the human population is sociopathic; even if they're off by ten fold it's a damned sobering thought. Thank you for the poem; you did honor to her by exploring a difficult subject.

G'day Linda...
A chilling story Linda. Sadly this kind of sadness happens to often. Society needs to be harsh on the offenders as the victim has no choice at all.
Thank you Linda
