Poems - Mother Night
Mother Nightby MichaelFirewalker
an ageless One walks through red-gold flame,
moves along a cobalt crest, approach unnoticed,
Her great presence distant yet.
She listens as city hand-cannon fire evening benediction
at violent souls born of raging desperation
where virulent addiction cracks high, young wings
precariously aloft on deadly cross winds.
within Her own impassive stillness, this fateful one advances,
inexorable inside her shroud of rolling air.
its velvet black falls to ground, muffling hissing light and sound.
city light, city sound, She rides them slowly down.
graceful shadows prophecy arrival of Her sister, Moon,
as dancing maiden silhouettes prepare Her room,
their final bows shatter horizon’s crimson glow.
through ruby-obsidian shards of glass
Her power enters now,
flowing over broken fingers
reaching out blind minds
who find Her wonder-fine
this kabbalistic entity
this dark archetype
of universal majesty.
marvelous is She,
Her scheduled anointing, a cooling pall,
baptizes all the souls She found
abandoned hot in concrete blocks
stacked high upright to scrape at sky
from on the ground.
their quick-lime hearts,
unwashed thoughts become
the malodorous litter shabbily strewn about.
strung-out sluts in dirty satin remember once
She hid their grief, helped their mad convulsions cease.
again they beg Her cover each,
pack them gently please
inside the cold glitter of Her peace.
listen as they pray:
“lift us from this hideous day.
we must forget our thirst!
we writhe awake in acid light,
caustic grief sears us white.
our life-blood screams the last
countless flight scenes
death has slashed,
as we become fire
paled to dust and ash.
lead us down to where it’s black.
we need to sink, sleek and wet,
drowning as we drink your thick, dark wine.
lady cool, sister fine, we seek your breathless deep,
hungry for that deathless sleep
inside your timeless keep.
hold us now,
O primordial Mother Night.
